Dumb question about Amex prequalification

I have an Amex corporate card. My name is on it, but it is paid by my company.

I have thin (but positive) credit. I do not have FICO scores. VS around 630-650 (fluctuates).

When I log in, using the username and password associated with my corporate card, and expand the megamenu and click the link called "check for prequalified offers." That takes me to a page with "menu_cards_prequal_offer" in the url. But, nowhere on the page do the words "you are prequalified for these cards" or anything like that appear. Three cards appear at the top of the page: green card, gold card, and in the third spot are different cobranded cards when I refresh the page (Hilton, Marriott). However, there isn't text on those three saying "prequalified," there is just a link to apply for the card.Below those three is a module labeled "browse all cards." When I click the link to apply to one of the three cards at the top, I don't see words saying I am prequalified and I do not see specific interest rates.

I can't figure out if this is saying I am prequalified for the three cards at the top. I called Amex today and was transferred twice. The three people I spoke with could not answer that question. They just told me to apply. I am reluctant to do so because I wouldn't even qualify for a run of the mill unsecured card yet beyond perhaps a Quicksilver, which would also be iffy. However, anecdotally, I have heard that having a corporate card makes you a shoo-in to qualify for some of their personal cards.

Can anybody clarify if these three cards are or are not prequalified, and more generally, if having a corporate card does or does not give massive brownie points in applying for personal cards?

Thanks!

Re: Dumb question about Amex prequalification

Amex has a few different sets of terminology. Easy way to find out is click on "apply now" on the card you're reviewing. I just logged in and tried this on two different cards.

Here is what I got when I selected the EDP

When you're preapproved it will tell you flat out. Also check the T&C's and if you see an APR range then you're just doing a cold app, but if you see solid APR you're definitely getting it lol hope this helps

Re: Dumb question about Amex prequalification

Very helpful - I don't see that language. Instead, I see "get a decision in as little as 30 seconds." So, I guess I'll try again in a few months. Thanks!

Re: Dumb question about Amex prequalification

Amex isn't opposed to thin files, but they do seem to favor 670+ scores depending on the card. Entry level cards (no annual fees) tend to be a bit easier to snag up, but their underwriting criteria is not very broad. Having the corp card definitely helps, but that doesn't mean they'd feel bad about slamming you with a very low SL and high APR.

I've seen from time to time people get approved for a card starting at $500 and then having 'credit steps', although I've never seen anything published on thier website. Give it a few months, let your scores produce (specifically EX because that is what they will pull) and take a stab at it when your chances are increased

Very interesting and good info!

I just tried this and got the "XXXX, You are pre-Approved"  There was an APR range.  When I hit back, the 3 cards changed except for the Platinum.  Can't really justify the annual fee on that one.  I'll try again in a couple months and check the APR Smiley Happy

Re: Dumb question about Amex prequalification

FWIW on my Amex pre-approvals I also always get a range for the APRs.

Re: Dumb question about Amex prequalification

I was just approved for the Delta Gold Card last night and mine was the "XXXXX, you are preapproved!" I did have APR ranges instead of a specific.
