The trick still works.
In places that don't take credit the best you can do is earn 2% and that's a great return.
DMV, ARCO, WinCo and small stores.

Business PayPal accounts are not eligible for the cashback card anymore, but it appears that if you had the combo before the change, it still works.

It is however very easy to upgrade from personal to business accounts.
So to get the combo you need to sign up for personal account -> apply for CB MC -> upgrade to business account -> get the debit card
Actually if you have the combo from a personal account I recommend upgrading to business because some people reported that paypal closed their business debit card.

It's been working fine for me too. I use the combo almost exclusively with Plastiq to pay bills I normally have to send checks for or use bill pay with my checking account. At least, I beat the 2.5% fee by 0.5% ![]()

I am receiving mixed comments with this. I have had the business debit when I "upgraded" to business 3-4 years ago. There wasn't really any difference between personal and business. In fact, PayPal seemed to actively encourage it, as it bugged me every single time I signed in to my account. Fast forward to July this year, I applied for the cashback card. I then — just noticed — that I have the "upgrade to business account" link on my account settings. I do not know for how long this had happened. This is weird because I have upgraded to business before, which is why I got the debit card. I have not received any mail from PayPal wanting to revoke my card. I personally believe this is only happening for recent "converts". Anyone here personally in the same boat?
I have the business debit card, a couple of months back it expired and a new one did not arrive. So I called them and they said they closed it. No letter no warning etc. I reopened it online as they instructed me to do and now it won't let me apply for the Paypal 2% cashback card. It says I'm not elgible.
@SBR249 wrote:Yes, you can have 2 paypal accounts. The most common example I can think of is that someone will have both a personal account under their own name and a business account under their company's name. But why would you want multiple Paypal accounts of the same type?
right now i have a business account (have the business debit but not the CB credit card) so i would have to downgrade, right? but maybe it would be best to just open a new paypal account to apply for the credit card first then upgrade it to business to get debit card.

Yeah, I remember reading about that, and I think there was something about it on Doctor of Credit. I've always had just a personal account since 2005 and have had the business debit card since at least 2009 or 2010, and I never asked for it, it just came in the mail one day and has been replaced a couple times when it expired. I see no benefit to upgrading to a business account and will just leave things are they are, my current biz debit card is good to 3/2021, unless of course they cancel it - but they're making money when I use it, so it would be dumb of them to close it. I never carry the biz debit, or any debit card, I use the biz debit on Plastiq to pay my mortgage as the 3% combo with PP 2% MC cover's Plastiq's 2.5% fee, and also use it for paying bills like insurance & utilities.
