I'm asking for my cousin. She was denied Discover student (offered secured) and denied for Walmart.
She's taking the secured card but wants to try a store card. Suggestions?
Fako CK score - 600. Age of credit history - 2 years. 10 student loans in good standing (no lates). 1 repoed car from 2012 (cosigned) and unpaid judgement for that repoed car.
Did she try anything from Barclays? They usually pull TU and issue some store cards. If not, the secured card route would be the way to go and if your cousin is in college, there are other college cards she can try out first as well. I think the BoA one would be the best one to choose from as some people have reported that it graduates early in some cases. Also I think it's much harder to get cards generally without having a FICO score so that's another reason why I'd recommend the secured card much more.

Walmart will approve down to the low 600s. if Wally denied her, I don't think trying any of the other GE/SyncB cards would be beneficial right now. Has she received the denial letter yet?

sounds like she is just reaching for cards . Don't app for cards you can get , app for cards you actually would use imo
Credit unions like SDFCU offer nice secured card products with no HP.
Barclays will want to see revolving lines with good history, but Cap1 might approve for credit steps or secured.

I'm guess she just doesn't have enought revolving credit history, plus the two baddies. I recommend she use the secured CC for 6 months and then try again for Wally or any of the other GE backed store cards.
She might also want to try the "shopping cart trick." VS does a soft pull on EQ through this trick, but I've seen members approved with scores in the upper 500s.

Agreed. That's definitely one of the dangers of things like the "shopping card trick"...getting credit just because you can. But there are useful cards that aren't difficult to obtain.
No she just got denied like an hour ago. She reconned both and they both said no.
She wants in Navy because she's eligible. Does anyone think Navy would issue her a card if she doesn't have any revolving accounts currently? I'm not even sure I want her to be in Navy because I think she's irresponsible. My grandma doesn't want to sponsor her because my grandma is afraid she'll ruin it for all of us. Are we wrong to think Navy would punish us all if we allow one bad apple in? I doubt Navy would punish us all if my cousin turns out be irresponsible... but we don't think we should allow her to be in Navy because we love Navy too much and don't want to jeopardize our relationship with them. Navy has been really good to my family - refinancing all of our cars, even a car with $10,000 negative equitity. I <3 NFCU.
