Excellent Credit but denied CLI by Chase... Why?

So here's the situation.  My scores across the board are between 760-768 with all 3 CBs.  I've had a Chase Platinum Visa for exactly 2 years.  When I got it issued, they gave me a $5000.00 CL.

I've used the card responsibly since then.  I've made small purchases frequently (ranging from $60.00 to $500.00) in the 2 years I've had the card.  The moment the charges posted online, I would pay them in full immediately.

The wife, kid, and I are taking a trip to Dublin, Ireland and the Czech Republic at the end of April.  We got 3 round trip tickets for $1200.00.  (Ryan Air rocks!)  I put the charge on my Chase card and as always, I paid it right off as soon as the charge posted online.

I also have a Discover card ($4500.00 CL) and an AMEX Blue Sky ($10,000 CL) but many places in Europe don't necessarily accept these cards.  I wanted to get a CLI on my Chase so I figured I'd call them and ask.  I figured I've had the card for over 2 years, I have no lates, excellent credit, and I've never had a CLI with them.  I have no inquiries on my report at this time so I figured one won't hurt.

I called up the rep and asked them how they do business.  Chase does do hard inquiries for any type of CLI that you request.  I explained to the rep how I am taking this trip and I'd like to have a bigger CL just in case.  He saw that I have an excellent payment history with them but informed me that they will still have to do a credit check with the CBs before proceeding with the CLI.  I said this is fine.

He put me on hold for a few and then came back.  He informed me that I do not qualify for ANY type of CLI at this time.  I was shocked!  He also said they don't show the reason nor do they see the CR in front of them, but I will get the letter in the mail explaining their rationale.

So my question is, how is that after having this CC for over 2 years, having excellent credit, using this card frequently and paying it in full all the time, NEVER having a CLI on this particular card... can they deny me?  Needless to say, I was quite upset.  Anybody have any clue as to why they would turn me down?  Thanks!  Smiley Happy

My vote would go to the pre-approval at Bank of America and get a new card and sock drawer chase.  They have gotten really stingy with cl lately with credit woes.

I really don't want another card.  I'll be writing them a letter when I return from my trip to ask them for a reconsideration.  I can't wait to hear what their justification is for turning me down.  Smiley Mad

I share your sentiments! Something similar happened to me, but I don't want to replace them. But I will sock drawer them for a while and call back in a few weeks....good luck!

A few months ago (October?) I called and they said they would bring it to a similar point to my highest cards.  As it was my lowest CL by over $5K, that resulted in a major increase.  I got a hard but it was worth it.

I guess the credit has crunched as far as Chase are concerned.

Is it possible that Chase does a modified version of the secret tiers that Cap 1 does, and this card has topped out?

By coincidence, I got a so-called preapproval for this card in the mail today. My scores and history aren't anywhere near as good as yours, and when I looked through the offer (0% APR on new purchases and BT for 15 months, but no particular rewards), I wondered if this is their intro good card, so to speak.

Maybe they're trying to force people into the rewards cards (with fees!) for better credit lines? All this is complete speculation on my part, so if there are members with plain-Jane Chase Plat Visas with $30K CL's, please feel free to blast me out of the water! Smiley Very Happy Won't hurt my feelings a bit.

BTW, usafjay, I'm shopping for a ticket to Dublin, and RyanAir had never occurred to me. Thanks for mentioning it, and I hope you and the fam have a wonderful time!

edit: Oh, well, if MV's card was a Plat Visa, he just sank me very nicely. Smiley Happy

Mine is an Airmiles card (United)

And the only time I ever flew Ryan Air it was very basic and like a cattle market!  But that was some time ago  Smiley Happy

Hey, it's not for me, it's for DD#2. And if I could fly Icelandic Air to Luxembourg back in 1973, with a zillion other middle-class American kids with backpacks and hiking boots, she can suffer a little, too! Smiley Wink Yeesh, speaking of cattle cars...

Heya Hauling!

Can't wait for the trip.  I've been stationed out of the US since 99.  (3 years in Italy, 2 in Germany, 1 year in Honduras, and now currently in Spain over 2 years).  We've never been to Ireland or the Czech Republic but we are certainly looking forward to it.

I plan to take a lot of pics.  Perhaps when we return we'll post some pics up here if that's okay with the mods... ?
