Excessive fraud on Chase?

Have others found their Chase card info gets stolen with suspicious frequency, adjusting for the number of cards a person has and how much use they get? That's been the experience in my family for the last several years. With other issuers it has been very rare, but with Chase it's quite common.

How often can Chase be getting hacked? And if that's not it, then what?

Re: Excessive fraud on Chase?

I've not had any of my 4 Chase accounts (3 personal 1 business) compromised.

Re: Excessive fraud on Chase?

When I had chase, I never experienced fraud and they were my daily drivers for years.

If anything, my issue with them was constantly flagging my purchases for fraud when it wasn't. 🤦‍♂️

That just happened to me.  I hadn't used my Freedom Unlimited at all for a few months, then ran a charge out of state for about $95 at a U-haul dealer.  Chase usually doesn't blink at all with my location since I travel often for business but they denied the charge, then emailed me about potential fraud.  I used another card, cleared it up later.

I don't think there is any hacking going on with Chase.  They issue a lot of cards, they're the biggest bank in the USA by a wide margin, and they're a big target for theft.

I don't know but I'm guessing that people who steal credit card accounts may think that, as a huge bank, that Chase issues higher limit cards that stand a better chance of absorbing any fraud charges, even though from my experience their limits are typical for most people.  Or maybe that the shear volume of transactions may make it more likely that one fraudulent charge will slip through unnoticed.

In my experience, I've had fraud on numerous accounts including not only Chase but also Discover, American Express, Capital One, and UMB.  My fraud with Chase has been typical in reference to my overall accounts and overall fraud incidents.

They would approve everything by my work, but if I went a couple of blocks east, denied. The worst part was waiting for them to confirm and then to try the charge again. A few times, I said screw it and used another card because it was taking too long. I'd be in my car leaving before the text or a phone call came, sometimes.

Re: Excessive fraud on Chase?

I don't think Chase's internal security is the issue.

Over the years, I've had 3 instances of fraudulent charges on my 20+ credit cards.

2013 - CitiBank - Unusual online purchase, attempted shipped to another address so CitiBank froze my account.

2016-Fidelity Rewards - Purchase of a bus ticket in Mexico.  I noticed it and called Fidelity

2016-Chase - 3 "card present" transactions in Washington DC after I used my card at a hotel there.  I suspect someone who handled the card there copied my information.

Didn't ever lose any money, of course.  And no reason to suspect the problem originated at the credit card company.

I felt like you about "Synchrony" managed cards.

About 7 years ago I had two cards managed by them that kept being compromised every few months.

I closed both, however Chase has better cards than the junk that I closed.

Probably just a coincidence, or does Chase own Synchrony ?

Re: Excessive fraud on Chase?

From my current set of cards, I've had 2 fraud instances and they were both on Chase cards. (Chase caught both of them.)

Someone attempted to spend $600 at Bestbuy.com on my CFU. Chase sent me an alert and then new cards.

Someone attempted to spend $100 at some online old person clothing site on CSP.  Ditto the above.

Back in the 1990's, someone attempted to use a clone of my Citi Drivers Edge Visa 3000 miles away from where I had just used the real card 10 minutes earlier. New card number issued and overnighted to me in NY.

I would try harder to prevent others (in my family or otherwise close to me) from being able to do that to me.
