No credit card required
Browse credit cards from a variety of issuers to see if there's a better card for you.
I turned 18 a few weeks ago, and applied for the Capital One Journey card. Having no credit history at all, I was approvd with a limit of $300. I understand the basics of credit cards, such as statement dates and due dates and such. What I'm having trouble understanding is my utilization in order to buld my credit. Can somebody give me an example of what I should be doing, preferrably using my $300 limit in the example? It would be much appreciated!
Welcome to the forum. Use the card how you want just don't go over the credit limit. Before statement closes pay it down to about $25. After it posts you can pay it off before due date to avoid interest. You always want to try to have one card post <9% utilization. Paying the cards to zero you get a lower score than if you post <9%.
That ^
But that is good advice for optimizing your score at any given time. Holding ideal utilization doesn't really build your credit, as you can easily change it from month to month. Most importantly would be to make sure you pay on time. To "build" your credit you need to build good history, so I would focus on that above everything else at the front end. Target 1-9% utilization if you're about to apply for another TL.
And welcome. You'll thank yourself later for trying to plan your credit out before you get in too deep.
Alright thanks. That's exactly what I wanted to know. I'm glad I only got a $300 limit, that way I can't get into too much touble before I learn how to manage a credit card. Thanks guys!
