What a way to start the day first more of the four letter word (SNOW) then I called AMEX only to find out my card has been compromised. First NFCU now AMEX!? I'm so ready to go back to the cash only system my grandfather so loved.
I was really disappointed that NFCU didn't catch it when it happened because the charge was 100x the amount I've ever charged and it was about 2 weeks after the Target ordeal. Thankfully I was monitoring my account but by then I'd gone from checking every day to checking every couple of days so I didn't catch it until 2 days after the transaction posted. They did refund me the charge but it would've been more satisfying if the charges could've been caught by NFCU and immediately reversed like AMEX did. Hopefully this way the items will not be received since it was online purchases. This is all so disheartening to say the least
Sorry to hear. Hopefully it all works out for you. Unfortunately, it's a risk most everyone is willing to take. There isn't a way to make the credit game 100% secure.

This is why credit cards are great! Had it been a debit card you probably would have gotten the money back, but it would take a while. Let's say you carry the cash instead. If you were to get robbed you think your ever going to see that cash again? Nope. What's the big deal here? One bank reversed the charge as soon as you caught it and the other caught it themselves. I'd say that the credit card system just worked in your favor.
I agree that it was good it was a credit card opposed to a debit card. I can't remember the last time I used my debit card but the point is I do have one with NFCU and the fact that someone could have gotten me for $6,000 causing me to wait for NFCU to reimburse me my own money is discouraging.
It did work out for me. But not everyone has that same luxury. Some have to use their debit cards and it would be good to know that during a time where NFCU was sending messages and posting on their website that they were "watching" for fraudulent charges that they were actually doing just that. Just my thoughts. Clearly a good lesson as to why it's best to use credit cards opposed to debit cards if you can.
Surprised that NFCU did not catch this. During Christmas holidays they called me like 10 times to makes sure I had authorize the transaction. Thankfully you were able to catch it. If that would have been your debit card you would have been waiting a long time for that money. Count your blessings.
mo15473 - I'm glad NFCU was on top of it for you and I understand no bank can catch everything. But note mine was a $6,000+ on a card I never charged more than $100 in a single transaction.
I think there is a misconception that I'm complaining and I'm not. I just prefer AMEX proactive style to suspicious charges.
