Once you're in with AMEX you are able to check for other prequals anytime you want. I snuck in with a Delta Gold for my 1st card not even 2mo ago and was approved for the Hilton Honors yesterday. All you do is log in on a computer and bring up the list of cc's. Click the apply button on any card you like. If you see something like you are preapproved  get a decision in 30s your good to go. If not just exit the card app. So far I am preapproved for all the cobranded cards but nothing else. I'm going to wait until I am before applying for the core AMEX line and be very picky before I go for no 3. BTW no hp after your 1st card.

You unfortunately triggered a minor pet peeve of mine - the  "no hp after your 1st card" claim is a myth although we still get members that make the claim.

The odds are definitely against any single application made by a current cardholder triggering a HP,  but it does happen and it is not a rare occurrence.

You are of course correct. I shouldn't have made a blanket statement like that. Anytime you apply for credit there's a chance of a hp. I should have added as always YMMV.

If you're preapproved for a Hilton Aspire, Bonvoy Brilliant, or Delta Reserve, I'd say your odds are pretty good for any of their core products.

I am preapproved for the cobranded cards you mentioned but I just checked again and none of the charge or revolver AMEX cards show I'm preapproved. I'll just wait. I haven't even tried for a cli yet since my Delta Gold is not even a month old and I was just approved for the Hilton.

Re: Foot in the door with AMEX

I would say it's true. My first card with Amex was the EveryDay card that I applied for in college 3 years ago. It started of as $4,000 starting limit and has increased a lot since then. I now have other Amex cards too. The Amex cards I applied for after the EveryDay card have been soft pull. Actually, my EveryDay card was a soft pull too! I think it was because I had a pre-qualification with Amex for that card. I remember waiting for a hard pull to show up but it never came.

Re: Foot in the door with AMEX

I was approved for a BCP a half a year after I got my BCE. My scores at the time were still in the mid-high 600's as well as a charge off still reporting on my file for all 3 CRA's. They recently auto cli'd my BCP by $4k , so I'd say they take care of their customers. Treat them well and they'll do the same for you. Love Amex so far.
