If I buy a $500 visa gift card at a gas station will I get 5% cash back, same as if I'd bought gasoline?

Some gas stations would have those sort of purchases as cash only, but otherwise it should work.  (Penfed, for example, is more fussy, the MCC is automated fuel dispenser, not gas stations, so only gas paid at the pump gets the enhanced reward).

Problem with doing this with the Freedom is the very low cap, so the rewards are limited.

Re: Freedom 5% question

+1 to what longtimelurker said.

Also, becareful of the MCC code of the convenience store itself!

Some stores located in gas stations are labelled as convenience / grocery stores, so you might only get 1% as well.

Re: Freedom 5% question

It will probably work. You can try doing a small purchase as a test to see if it counts for the 5% cash back on gas.

Re: Freedom 5% question

I work at Hess and everything you buy there counts as gasoline on Chase Freedom. I haven't tried buying prepaid or gift cards however. Our company is very careful with those because they have experienced a lot of scams/ money laundering attempts etc so any significant gift card or prepaid card purchases are highly scrutinized.

Re: Freedom 5% question

I use BP Shell or Circle K usually. Hoping to use a 500GC once a month to purchase a money order for rent.
