Frozen AMEX Points

So like many of the opportunists on this forum; and others, that applied for the 100k AMEX Plat offer, I attemped a 60k point transfer to Aeroplan for a sweet New Year's redemption I want to take advantage of and was hit with the dreaded 'unable to process request error'.

I called the automated transfer line but it redirected me to a live agent who tried to process my request, only to let me know my account was locked and would be 48 hours for a rep to contact me.

Being keen to the many posts of this widespread issue across various sites, I'm expecting a call telling me that it will be 6-8 weeks from when the points posted (6/21 in my case) to have my points unfrozen.

I, for one think that what Amex is doing here is absolutely ludicrious. I get that some try to game the system and this particular offer is probably quite susceptible to that, but every account holder should not be punished for a few rotten apples.

Personally, I would never engage in any of those shady practices. I've had AMEX since '12 and all my spend is legitimate and I fully intend on keeping the Plat as it's my most valuable perks card.

To have to pay $450 annual fee upfront, meet the minimum spend req. and have my points post -- all in vain b/c I can't even use them is crappy business on their part. Sorry, just needed to vent and possibly hear from any who are going through the same and what recourse they took to get their transfers working again.

This has happened to a lot of people  My suggestion is to read the thread on FlyerTalk where this issue has been discussed quite a bit.

I agree it sucks, but as one who has little hesitation in taking advantage of issuers:  did you receive a targetted 100K offer yourself, or did you use some other technique to get it?

lol. No technique needed. It was a public link that was posted on many blogs and forums who are paid affiliates to prop up their sign up links. No RSVP sharing if that's what you're suggesting.

The shady practices I'm referring to are those that MS to get the signup bonus, transfer their points immediately once it posts, get the airline credit and then close the card before the AF is due.

I follow that thread and others closely, but there seems to be alot of inconsistent data surrounding this issue.

Well that's somewhat to be expected because it seems that they're reviewing accounts one by one to see if people met the spend legitimately or not and why you might not think you did anything 'shady', I'm not sure Amex views it the same.  That link that was passed around was never intended to be public and I assume Amex's position is if they have to make you wait for awhile to make use of your points then they're preventing you and others from closing the accounts and not pay the AF.  It's also why they stopped giving out prorated refunds.  Not saying you did anything wrong and had I been eligible I would have done the same but I'm just guessing as to Amex's position.

Exactly.   What is shady or not is really up to the issuer.  Clearly Amex isn't completely OK with the massive sign up to this offer, and getting the links from sites (affilliated or not) that also teach MS techniques might suggest there isn't too much moral space between the two!   (Of course, as a MSer, I am biased!)

Re: Frozen AMEX Points

It's really a bad move from Amex. I have applied for the Platinum 100k offer and the points have been in my MR account for a while now. I have not yet tried to use them, so I don't know if they are frozen or not.

I was planning to keep this card for at least a year, but now I'm very tempted to cancel it before the new no-AF-refund rule comes into place in September.

Re: Frozen AMEX Points

Thanks for sharing OP!

As someone who is in the same predicament, it is really hard to side with AMEX on this one. Not only have they frozen the 100K points, which would be understandable- they froze the entire account. So any points you had from before are also unable to be transferred. AMEX had no issues charging the $450 AF right away. If they no longer allow a prorated refund and you only have 30 days to request one, then the points should be released after 4 weeks. At least the ones you had from before. They only allow one bonus per lifetime, so pretty hard to game the system if you intend to stay with AMEX. The worst part is no one really has a straight answer. 6-8 weeks from when the minimum spending was met, 6-8 weeks from when the points were deposited into the account or 6-8 weeks from when you get the message. Very sloppy to say the least. As the OP states good paying customers who intend to keep this card because of the benefits, have been caught in the line of fire. For me AMEX has lost its #1 spot. With companies like Discover, Chase and Citi offering vastly better products and service.
