Fully automated card cancelation call (AMEX BCP) -- Is this a new trend?

I just called in to American Express to cancel my Blue Cash Preferred card (don't really like the way the cash back program works, and I prefer MR, I think).  I was still planning to cancel my card if Amex offered me a retention offer, but I wasn't really expecting that I wouldn't even speak to a human.  The automated system asked me what I wanted, I said I wanted to close my card, and it just had me say my info and agree to certain terms, and then it was over.  Have other people experienced this with Amex or other banks?

All of Synchrony cards are that way, i canceled my lowes, Ashley furniture and zales cards all within a 5 minutes span.
I know most people call just to BEG for points or free AF or something but i was extremely happy that i didnt have to talk to a REAL person.
Ill say im sorry for anyone who lost there job due to a computer doing it now.

Yes, this can be a problem for those who want retention offers (sounds like what happened was OK for you).  A while back I submitted an email asking about closing (can't remember which issuer) and the card was closed.

So for those that really want to at least consider a retention offer, always call and get routed to a rep, avoiding terms like "close" at automated prompts.

It's just possible that the system is smart enough so that it knew you weren't marked as "Retain" (so there were no retention offers) but if you want them, get to a rep!  (With no guarantees of course)

That's good to know! I hate talking to people, so if I ever close my BCP I will be happy to know I don't have to actually speak to someone!

It's a YMMV situation.

I should add that I tried to close my AAdvantage card twice. The first time they offered Admiral's club passes for $350 in spend within a month. After that, I attempted to close it again and it was automated.

I’ve closed accounts with Amex, Synchrony and Comenity using the automated system.

Yeah, it was a good card, and I got quite a bit of cash back out of it (paticularly when I'd buy Starbucks gift cards at Meijer when Meijer had a deal to get $5 back after spending $50 on gift cards--all of the rewards/discounts combined, including Starbucks Rewards, I was getting around 25% back).  But I realized that I was splintering my rewards across too many rewards programs.  So I've decided to consolidate my Amex spending on MR earning cards.  (I plan on upgrading my ED to EDP once it's a year old and an upgrade offer shows up).
