Re: Gas Card Question /Data/Curiosity

My CITI Costco Anywhere Visa.  Smiley Happy

Since I normally buy gas at Costco and both our vehicles take premium fuel, I usually save at least 25 cents or more per gallon just starting with that choice.  Combined with the Costco Anywhere Visa, I save another 5% at Costco gasoline (up to $7K annually) or 4% at non-Costco stations (subject to the same $7K cap.)

The other cool thing about my Costco Visa is that it doubles as my membership card, so a single contactless swipe at the pump logs me in as a member and authorizes the charge.

When I'm not buying gas at Costco, I'm usually price-shopping with my Gas Buddy app.

My back-up choices for gasoline would be:

  • Discover IT:  5% back typically one quarter of the year, up to $1500 total spend.
  • Verizon Visa:  4% - uncapped - *although rewards are paid in Verizon Dollars for statement credit.
  • AFBA Visa issued by UMB (Simply Rewards program) - 3% uncapped.
  • AOD FCU Visa - 3% uncategorized on up to $1500 monthly spend.

Re: Gas Card Question /Data/Curiosity

I use my grandfathered Amex "old" Blue Cash @ 5% for gas/grocery/drugstore.  My household doesn't use much gas these days as both myself and P2 are now fully retired.

SYW gas is capped too!  $10,000 / yr (combined with grocery and dining spend).

True, but I could nit-pick that I said it wasn't capped MONTHLY, and made no mention of yearly 😜😁

Re: Gas Card Question /Data/Curiosity

If Costco is where you want to get gas, then get the Citi Costco card.  If you don't care where you get gas, then there are several options for gas multipliers.

Re: Gas Card Question /Data/Curiosity

Depends on the flavor(s) of the month:

- Citi Custom Cash for 5% combined with random 2-3% CB offers @ certain stations thru the Citi app.
- Chase FF if gas or PayPal is the 5% qtrly category
- Discover It (rotating) if gas is the 5% qtrly category
- Whichever Amex has the spiciest statement credit (e.g., I had an Exxon 10% CB for a few months in 2024)

Local grocer has cheap gas but it's not Top Tier nor does it code as a gas for CC purposes. In general, I only fill up w/ Top-Tier fuel brands.

Re: Gas Card Question /Data/Curiosity

The gas stations in my area - except Costco - levy a 2-3% credit card surchage.  I have Costco membership, but the nearest location is not that convenient - basically have to make a separate trip just to pump gas.

However, Shell and ARCO stations are on my commute and consistently offer reasonable prices (especially ARCO.)

Both brands also sell gift cards at grocery/office/home improvement stores, and paying with gift cards avoids the credit card surcharge.

So my default gas card is actually any credit card offering 5% on grocery purchases (or just use Ink Cash at Staples.)

I do keep the Abound Visa in my mobile wallet for 5% on gas purchases, in case gift cards run out.  Prefer it to the Costco Visa because Abound automatically credits the 5% at the end of each billing cycle.
