I have been a BoA customer for years. I've had a business for the last 3 years and ran everything through BoA (merchant account, too). Consistent $45-60k running through the business checking every month. Been gardening for a little less than a year, from a single initial $500 card to now over $25k throughout various cards that I fill up and pay off each month with business expenses. Applied for a BoA card 9 months ago and was declined. Applied again 3 and 6 months after that; declined again, even with recon. Eventually spoke to the person who had the ability to push the magic button, asked him if he could see all the money that goes through BoA on a regular basis. He said he could see it, as well as my other credit cards and their good history but I should call him back in 6 months, that he couldn't even give me a tiny token credit card just for being a good customer. I told him that I probably would no longer be a BoA customer in 6 months... He didn't seem to care... Sooo... I'm almost done switching everything over to Chase. I've heard they are pretty good about giving their cards to people who bank with them and demonstrate a good relationship. I've been declined 3 months ago on their SP and Ink cards, but I'm hopeful that with a good banking history over the next few months I'll have a better shot at recon if I'm declined. Anybody have any good stories about Chase and getting cards you might not otherwise get if you have a good banking relationship with them? Or tips on timeline?
Well I can't say for sure that you can get a card based off your banking relationship with them alone, but it may help if you're on the fence with approval.
I applied for a Freedom card about a year ago and was denied. I then reapplied about a month ago and was approved. My application was pending review for about 2 weeks and I'm sure my banking relationship with them helped but I also maintained positive credit history since last time I apped so that probably helped more. I've been with Chase banking for probably about 10 years.
Based off what's in your wallet, I don't see why you've been getting declined. Are there any baddies on your CR? I would try applying for the Freedom as it seems to be a good starter card to build a relationship with Chase. Maybe after 6 mo to a year then app for the CSP.
There are a couple baddies, but those should soon be falling off. One thing I have to say about Barclays is that they are awesome if you use their cards regularly, but you really do have to wait 3, preferably 6, months before CLI requests or new cards. They also compete with themselves. Originally I had an old Juniper card with $3k. One day I applied for Arrival plus and got $7.5k and on the same day US Airways and got instant $12.6k as if they were competing to give me the best card with each subsequent pull. Then I switched the available credit cuz I like the Arrival Plus better. Anyway.... I'm hoping the same will happen with Chase in the future, and I've also heard that they do special reconsiderations if you have over $10k in a checking account with them...
Yeah Barclays is strange. Can't quite understand them. You have to remember though, they're also easier in most cases to get a card with than Chase.
I'd say try for the Freedom. I app'd and was approved with a few lates (in dispute) on Student loans from 2010. My initial CL is only $500 but that's also probably because my limits on other cards only max at $1K. I use my Freedom instead of my debit card and pay off weekly to hopefully get a decent CLI soon. Others have been successful.
I have a checking account with Chase but barely ever use it and have gotten declined for the Freedom mainly for not having over a year of credit history and inquiries and new accounts. With BoA, it was mainly just too many inquiries as to why I couldn't get their student version of the BOA Cash Rewards card though I have a checking account with them that I've been using frequently since last year and put a lot of money in.
Got Discover IT. No banking relations.
Got chase freedom. no banking relations.
I neeeeeed to garden..... and I'm only a month into using Chase exclusively.... There's a good amount in the business checking account... I've heard there are special reconsiderations given to people that hold over $10k in checking account? Anyone know about that?
Got my first Chase card today and even though I have a checking account with Chase, I've barely used it at all as I said in the previous comment I made here. It was a good way for me to see if I had gotten approved for the card without waiting for an email though since logging into my account was how I able to know besides getting a phone call right afterwards.
Had it since like December or last year or so.

For me personally i wouldn't want to have to have 10k in checking account just to get one of their cards. They have some nice cards, but not worth having to have 10k sitting in checking account just to have access to their cards. I would rather invest the 10k in something else that would actually get me money back.
