With the move of cards to non-embossed numbers from addressograph compatible / impressionable cards.... has anyone seen more cards coming through damaged or defective..... Finally got my Citi DC card... opened it up... went to register it...wiped the debris from the paper off the card back and the last digit of the card actually wiped off.. didnt scratch it, or was aggressive... Realized it when i tried to activate it using the app..
Ended up calling in and ordering a replacement... though its a completely different number and the previous one was deactivated... At least they gave me some sort of account credit for the trouble... With cards moving to thermal transfer laminate / label (Discover IT), and this thermal ink that didn't seem to bond to the card correctly.... I sort of miss real embossed credit cards...

Never even thought this would happen. If it's only one digit wiped off and you can't recognize what it is, though, you can actually calculate the number based on other digits using the Luhn algorithm (or check with your online account where it usually shows the last 4 digits if it's already linked for you).
Anyways, my Discover it/CSR/Citi ThankYou Preferred all print the numbers on the back and haven't seen any issue with printing.
Some of them seem to be etched into the card...I think this will hold up longer. I don't have the card on me right now but my BoA Cash Rewards has my name etched on the front...not sure about the back and the actual numbers.
It's really easy to steal the number off of an embossed card. Put it under a piece of paper, rub, write down the security code, and the thief is set to go. Doing it in this primitive way is much less conspicuous than using a camera.
