Well, I don't know exactly what highly respected means here (or "very important" for that matter!) but as stated by others, Amex charge cards, like the gold, are relatively easy to get, certainly easier than getting the ED in the first place.

Re: Getting into Amex Family

I can tell you I burned Amex for just over $10k and got a Cash Magnet card around 5.5 yrs later. Since then I've picked up the Gold and ED cards so it's not impossible to get back in with a BK

Thank you so much for this information. I burned them for about $5k, and there is mixed information on whether they would ever allow me back in. I guess I have 5 more years to wait!

@Herb8108:  I agree with you about the relative perception of Amex compared to the relative ease of acquisition.  The company has done a great PR job.

Re: Getting into Amex Family

I agree. I had a bk13 on my report...it was discharged in February 2021. I was told on this message board that I should be good in 61 months after filing. After the discharge, I kept checking the AMEX prequal site and finally got some bait on March 12th (approx 61 mos). I applied and was approved for the HH Aspire, $3100 SL. I'm cool with that, I just wanted to get my foot in the door.

@rrscott426 Wow interesting if you don't mind me asking what was your credit when you applied?

Nope. They have on occasion pulled TU in addition to EX for borderline applicants.

Re: Getting into Amex Family

My DP also says "no, you can totally burn AMEX for a five digit sum in Chapter 13, and they'll take you back not too long after the bankruptcy resolves". Smiley Wink

(It was sometime after 12 months when the Chapter 13 was discharged as paid in full.)

And they definitely know I did this: the vanilla Platinum that was part of the Chapter 13 was considered open through the bankruptcy (so no signup bonus for me until sometime in the late 2020's).

Re: Getting into Amex Family

Well, maybe.  I filed for Chapter 13 in February of 2015 and burned AMEX for over $25,000; I tried AMEX a few months back and got an instant denial.

Chapter 13:

  • Burned: AMEX, Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo, and South County Bank (now Bank of Southern California)
  • Filed: 26-Feb-2015
  • MoC: 01-Mar-2015
  • 1st Payment (posted): 23-Mar-2015
  • Last Payment (posted): 07-Feb-2020
  • Discharged: 04-Mar-2020
  • Closed: 23-Jun-2020

I categorically refuse to do AZEO!
