Almost scary. I have been opted out since 2008 and to get this CITI invite. How the heck do they even have my info?

They get our information from the CRAs that sell it. AND, if you have any magazine subscriptions, those folks sell your information as well.

Re: Getting invitation while Opted out

I've been opted out since 2008. At the time, I opted out with the CRAs and all of my creditors (in good standing). I didn't receive any pre-approvals until 2010. What changed? Some of my creditors... that I didn't opt-out with. I've gotten lax over the years. I've done the Discover pre-approval thing, just to see if I was still "opted-out". I've gotten membership & discount cards (e.g. REI, Toys R Us, etc...). If I pull my reports from all three credit bureaus (annually, or purchase them for some other reason), I can see who has softed me. I'm still opted-out for promotional INQs, and there are none. But, REI knows that I shop there regularly and use Amex religiously. U.S. Bank underwrites the the REI card, so I started getting offers from them. I started getting offers from Discover after using ther pre-approval tool online, to make sure I was still opted-out. I went to a Kroger grocery store for the first time in years, and two weeks later I got an "invitation to apply" for the Kroger 1-2-3 Rewards Mastercard. I used to have the Juni B&N card (I closed it in a fit of prime snobbery, LOL!), and when I renewed my B&N Discount card, I got an invitation to apply. Both Chase (hate'em) and Citi (no experience with them) have been junk mailing me to high heaven since last summer.

But, I'm still opted-out. I've just got to remember to go affirm my "opt-out" status with all of my creditors, and discounters, and any & everyone else who has your name, email, phone number and/or mailing address... And everyone else, pretty much.

Also, pizzadude wrote this excellent and interesting reply on a thread over in the General Credit area that had to do with Opt-Out Failure:

With regards to CRAs notifiying/send alerts to CAs about consumers ( i.e. you and me ):

This is from experian, I am sure that the other CRAs offer similar services.   The consensus is that opt-ing out will remove you from CRA promotional inquiries, but I have no idea if opt-ing out removes you from this type of CRA data mining.

Ya think? Smiley Wink

They are coming out of the woodwork from more than one CA.  ALL are OLDY MOLDLY accounts -- several of which do NOT belong to us.  We lived on a strictly cash basis for YEARS and YEARS.  I hate to think what our credit reports looked like during that time.  There must have been loads of CAs reporting all kinds of nonsense.

But, regarding opting out and freezing my CRAs -- so far, I'm not too impressed.

Re: Getting invitation while Opted out

I think i know what happened.

when I got both of my GE cards, a piece of paper came with it and it said 'Yes' they can 'share' your information with their partners. There is a number to call to prevent some of it. I will try it tomorrow.
