As I'm moving along in my credit 'journey', I've decided that I should close cards that have served their purpose. One year ago, I opened a card with Merrick Bank. As promised, they doubled my credit at the 6 month mark. Since it was time to pay the annual fee I called and closed it today.
They definitely gave me a chance when I needed it. But I don't want to pay an annual fee for a card I have no plans to use. I can afford to let go of the $1,100 credit line. My utilization is already under 5%. And judging from what I have seen on the board there are CLI's but they are not significant in the long run. I'd still recommend the card as a rebuilder. But goodbye Merrick, goodbye
Merrick is a very good rebuilder card IMO and I had it at one time.. It helped me for about 14 months then it was time to say good-bye as well.
I'm glad others' experiences were the same. I never had a single issue with Merrick. All payments posted in a timely manner and their site always worked. In the year I had the card, today was the first time I ever called customer service. The gentleman I spoke with was polite and efficient.
I'd go with them any day over the Credit One, First Premier, etc. cards.

It's a good rebuilder card and doubling the limit at six months is not bad at all, but yeah beyond that, it's a limited card with little growth. Congrats on your successful journey onward and upwards from here. 😃
Thanks!
Merrick is a good rebuilder card, I had it for a year. This is just my superstision about Merrick but once before chase let me back in early 2014, I reconned a slate visa application because I had a good case to plead. the analyst told me that even though I burned chase 9 1/2 years ago, that's not why they arent approving me, they were refering to types of credit in use and said they would like to see no balance on the merrick bank visa.
I paid that card off, was approved for an amex green card. closed merrick and the rest is history for me and chase lol. but merrick was good for its purpose. whats really ineresting is that from googling I found out merrick was actually a card issued years ago as a low apr credit card. which shocked me because I thought they were the standard 26.9% and higher apr card today.
A Merrick Secured Visa was my first card I was able to open as an immigrant with zero credit history. Echoing other experiences, I had no problems with it. Kept it for ten months and then closed it and moved on following advice to do so here.
Nothing bad to say about them.
