He closed the credit Union card and got better. It's pretty clear what he did. He just gave additional details.

It's not entirely clear to me which card was closed. OP only says:

Score dropped from 798 to 763 due to account being closed by grantor.

and

It was credit card

Anything beyond that is assumption without further clarification.

In any case, it really doesn't matter. Reports need to be carefully reviewed to determine the cause(s).

I believe OP indicated that the slew of new cards were opened years ago? Don't think that is the impact nor his concern.
