HSBC Credit Line Increase

I have a credit card with HSBC. When I got that card back in Sept, the limit was $300 and my credit scores were in the mid 500 range. My average score is now 640, so I called in to request a credit line increase over the phone. They only gave me $100. I would think that with my improved scores, not lates payments in over 2 years that I could get a higher CLI than this. I just called them and put in a request for an appeal. Any idea what my chances might be?

I wish I knew which card card company would be me a limit of $1,500 to $2,500 based on my current credit score.

Thanks!

Slim. HSBC is not as generous as say Citi or Amex.

Re: HSBC Credit Line Increase

Citi has been the most friendly with me and CLI in that sense.  I have an Orchard Bank/HSBC card with a $200 limit.  It's been that way for a couple of years now.  I've attempted a few time to increase the CL, but they constantly deny me.  So I've stopped using the card a couple months ago because it's pointless to have a $200 card.  (That's only 3 tanks of gas for me!)

Re: HSBC Credit Line Increase

I just got approved for an Orchard card with a $300 limit yesterday. I guess i have to be prepared to be stuck at $300 for this card. I was hoping to get my limit higher to rebuild my credit.

Re: HSBC Credit Line Increase

I practically had no credit when I applied for the card.  Citi gave me a $1000 CL to start out with and OB/HSBC gave me $200.  Now my scores have dramatically increased, no late payments, never over my limit, and they still refuse to increase my CL.  They constantly tell me I do not have sufficient credit history for them to allow a CLI.

Re: HSBC Credit Line Increase

I got the Orchard Bank card about a year ago and it started out with only a $300 limit.  Since then the limit increased to $500, then $1000, then $2200 and last month they increased it to $2400.  I have not asked for any of the increases.  They seem to be a very fair, nice to deal with credit card from my experience.  I put over $1000 on the card last year for wedding expenses but paid them off within a few months so that may be something they look for (someone capable of making large purchases but then paying them off quickly....)?

Re: HSBC Credit Line Increase

jandj,
I just got a 300 limit Orchard card yesterday...What do you think i need to do to have them raise the limit to around $500-750 by end of this year..? Thats my goal...500 by end of 2007...1000 by mid 2008. and hopefully 1500ish by end of 2008.

Re: HSBC Credit Line Increase

I think they definitely look for you to use the card but also to pay it off within 2-3 months.  If you're able to, I would charge about $150-200 on it and then pay it off with maybe ~$75 payments over the next couple of months.  That shows that you're a good, worthwhile customer to them because you carry a balance, but you carry it very responsibly.  That's really all I've done and it has helped increase my credit score from 548 to 633 currently.

Re: HSBC Credit Line Increase

Wow, can anyone possible figure out Orchard Bank/HSBC's thinking on CLs?  I'm starting to think maybe they have a really big wheel that they spin. I got my OB/HSBC MaterCard a couple months ago with a $1500 CL. I have applied for and been approved for two more HSBC cards (Discover and Visa) but I don't have the cards yet and don't know the CL's.  I won't be surprized if they are only $200-$300 each.  If so, they will get closed and I will look for better.

Re: HSBC Credit Line Increase

No idea, but there appears to be some inconsistancies among all of us.  I'm sure there is more that goes into determining your CL, but it just seems awkward.  I've had a perfect history with them, my balance has been at $0, never more than $75-$80 for 2 years and no CL raise.
