HSBC wants you to go over the limit.
They will not let you go over by much.
The way it will happen is if a gas charge was run for just one dollar ($1.00) ... Then it clears at a higher closing figure that that takes you over, because you were to close to your limit before it cleared.
I would carefully read your intial credit card agreement with them, in addtion to any modification they may now seem to be offering.
Under all CC agreements I am familiar with, they have the right to change account terms such as your APR and CL if you go over limit.
And they can also impose an over-limit fee. Maybe that is all they are telling you, that going over limit will, at the least, cost you the fee?
The CCC does not decide you "can go over the limit." That its always your decision. If you are close to being maxed, maybe they did want you to go over the limit, showing a violation of the terms of your agreement with them.
Dont go over the limit, ever! It will only hurt.
Also, being over-limit is a major killer of your FICO score.
Capital One was hounding me a couple weeks ago... several calls a day. I finally answered and the CSR told me that they wanted to offer me the opportunity to go over my credit limit. That it would be great for emergencies.. etc. I told them no thanks. They were really pushy. I finally was able to have her accept no. I then got a call the next day from another CapOne CSR for the same thing, I told him I already spoke to someone and he wanted to know what I told them. I told him no as well. Crazy... :/
They acted like it was in my best interest and it was a favor/courtesy to me.
Anyone who thinks that a CCC company is a humanitian entity that would have called you repeatedly to make an offer for YOUR benefit doesnt understand capitalism.
They want you to go over-limit simply to put more money in their pockets, They apparently want to hold you in violaton of your CCC agreement with them.
