I just accidentally (long story) applied for a Best Buy store card, which is issued by HSBC. The online app, which I thought was for a soft, didn't go through. I called to finish it, and they asked if I had had any professional licenses (electrician, private investigator, etc.), and they asked what city my son lives in. (He has a BB store card.)
This seems to be their way of making sure that a misspelling of a name, or a mis-keying of a SSN, doesn't mix your history up with someone else's. I suppose in this day and age that we should be happy.
