I've read around here that most people( all that I've ever seen post about this) that Amex only asks for income verification if you go over 36K. I was up for an increase to my CLI so requested one of 36K total. It asked me to submit that document. Backed up and went to 35K. Same thing. Then tried 32K and got the request. That was several days ago. This morning tried it again and was prepared to complete the document this time. I decided to only request a 6K increase to 30K and it went right through.
I'm just wondering if they changed this since I've never heard of anyone getting asked to verify income for this amount.
I don't think anyone posting on these forums knows the specific rules but multiple datapoints, including my own experience, indicate that in most cases you can request up to $35K (not $36K) without being asked to submit a Form 4506-T.
It's all income and profile specific. However, 35k tends to be the norm. There are still reports of people getting it at 25k and people getting approved for 60k without needing it.

Spot on... totally YMMV. Some of us were asked, some were not, could probably make a crossword puzzle trying to figure out the metrics on it .
What is the point of growing AMEX to 60k?
You grow the BT cards like Discover and NFCU.

Because your spend patterns support a $60k card?
One could argue that building up a vast BT limit is equally pointless but more dangerous. That's like waving booze in front of an alcoholic then wondering why they're still an alcoholic later. CC debt is bad; finding ways to carry more CC debt is worse.
My experience has been $34500 before being asked, then ask for 5k every 181 days.
They will send you a stack of papers in the mail if you keep trying until it succeeds.

Amex is also known to give no-fee Plan It promos on existing accounts (occasionally, highly YMMV). So even someone who can afford to PIF may choose to carry significant balances if there's no interest charged and no need to apply for a separate installment loan or new card.
About a year ago I tried to take a $10k Marriott card up to $30k and got the request. It was for immediate spending (no time to wait) so I used another card.
In my case i got it at 27.7k only because I didn't use it for like 5 yrs. Then started using it 12x/month for 6 straight months. 3 CLIs later of 2.3k, 5k, 16k and no forms!
I've never been asked for proof of income for any of my business and personal Amex cards. I've also never asked for a big CLI, but rather let them grow on their own.
