As many of you know, I have the Zync with the autopay option. I previously posted about AmEx increasing my autopay from $500 to $940 (or some weird figure). However, as it turned out, they did not increase my hard limit at all. I had made multiple payments which crossed in their system and temporarily increased my hard limit until it rectified itself two days later (good thing I didn't go over the $500 limit during that time) and ultimately reverted back to the $500 hard limit. Ok, I was deflated and have moved on from that. In all honesty, I don't think the Zync autopay card will ever graduate or convert to NPSL (although we all know NPSL still has a limit but you know what I'm getting at) or any other AmEx card. I've never read of any conversion or upgrade stories, if you will, on any board from any website regarding the Zync autopay card. I have read folks hoping, wishing and praying that it does because they (myself included) were just so thrilled to be let in (or back in) to AmEx's graces. All that being said, if I decide to app for the green card, will I sustain another HP or will it be a soft? I'd like to have a "normal" AmEx card, and I can't lie...the $500 autopay is annoying and limited...because I really can't do much with it except pay it all the time because the limit is so low. My app date for my mortgage has been pushed back five months (due to a downpayment grant program I just learned about) and don't want any new inquiries or zero HP's whatsoever, if I can get away with it. Therefore if anyone can tell me that an app for the green will be a HP then I won't do it and will have no qualms about it and will just wait until September. But if it is a soft conclusively and unequivocably then I'll do it.
I think its easier to call them and ask/beg for an upgrade. Becuz even though apping as an already amex customer is usually a soft, it only stays soft if you're denied (trust me, I try it regularly cuz I want that BCE if it kills me). However, my understanding is once you're approved...it's a hard and sometimes from more than one CRs.
Always hard pull. Soft pull if upgrade.
Ron.
And in all honesty, I'd take the hard if approved because my Zync was backdated (without me even asking) to 1993, from when I had an AmEx Green in college. So I won't be dinged for AAOA there because I gather the Green would be backdated as well.

I would say freeze Equifax and TU, then go for it. In that case it wouldn't hurt, but I'm sure I've seen folks complaining that sometimes they do pull all 3 (if you're borderline apparently).

+1. This has also been my experience as well, if they don't approve you it will be a soft.
How long did you say that you have had the Zync card ? Has it been a year yet ?
