It is. More savings for 9.99 a month. Pays for itself and then some if you use a lot of gas as myself.

Not to get too off topic but I looked into it and am I correct that you can't use a credit card to pay?  Hence, you can't also get 5% CB from a credit card?  You pay with your debit card?  I could be wrong.

Correct. No CC, and no debit card either. Only checking account link. It'd be sweet if you could double dip and link a CC though.

ETA: @FireMedic1, I don't see a paid option in the gas buddy app, though?

@OmarGB9 @ptatohed Get the Free card

https://www.gasbuddy.com/pay

Once it arrived. I went online. Linked my checking account. You swipe their (Gas Buddy) card. Enter your PIN you created once the card arrived. Fill up. Thats it!

I looked into it, but wanted to have the protection of a CC.

Just in case.

Re: Help With GAS CARD!

Nothing is 100 % secure these days.

"We take security very seriously. We use multi-level security mechanisms including dedicated firewalls and VPN services. Data is transmitted securely through Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.2. Information is stored using end-to-end encryption and is managed using strict data access policies and controls. Additionally, we used an encrypted token system, which does not store your bank login credentials on our system. By linking your checking account to Pay with GasBuddy, we are able to avoid credit card interchange fees and pass those savings onto you!"

Here in lies the problem. Everyone gets so hyper-focused on the transportation security of data, that they forget about data storage! The truth is we don't know who they share YOUR stored data with, AND one has no way of being sure that one's bank login credentials aren't stored in their system anywhere. My favorite line in Privacy Policys is: 'we protect your data as required by law.' Problem is that the law doesn't provide much protection - especially against those who stand to benefit the most from your data!

All the noise sites make about the high security of data transportation is a bait and switch! Look over here but DON'T LOOK OVER THERE - where your data is stored! "Trust us - your data is stored and managed using strict data access policies and controls. We would never sell or share it with anyone! And of course we would never store your bank login credentials." LOL!

Yeah, whenever I decide I don't like the gas and ask to return it, they sure frown upon that and sometimes a chargeback is necessary.   Even when I have the receipt!  The nerve of these oil guys.

As for the discussion about security of banking credentials, why would you hand over such things when it's not even necessary here?  Instead of your password, you can link your account manually using routing & account number.  Anyone you've ever written a check to already has this information, and they might have carelessly tossed it in a public trash can after mobile-depositing it.

My main beef with linking checking accounts with my password is that it doesn't work half the time.  (It's virtually impossible for them to keep up with web site changes at thousands of small banks and CUs.)  Unless you bank at one of the mega-banks, in which case you're missing out on a ton of free money.

No the routing/account numbers is one of the few things in the banking industry that is heavly regulated and has legal protections (how it's handled and distroyed).  That little account number can be used to not only drain the money you have in the account but also up to the $250k FDIC daily limit (as in adding new debt) so it has to be protected just about as well as a SSN.

Anyone saying it's "just a SSN or routing/acct # it's no big deal it's already out there" has very little practicle knowleage about how they work or can be used against you.  Yes data breaches happen but it's up to us how we use them or who we give them to.

On topic :: Personally I would never use GasBuddy not becouse it's a scam, it does work.  But when you do not know how the money is being made, it means you are the product.  They are selling all of your data mostly to Cuebiq and Foursquare, two of the larger location-data brokers in the industry.  There privacy policy on the website states that they sell your location (gas stations) and drive (mean time betwen fillups) data to Arity as well plus any information the app pulls from your phone (gps/usage/favorite apps/etc) if you do not lock it down.

For me it's less about the security and more about the privacy but I would never give a app company a routing/acct #, ever and I've worked for tech based app companies in the past.

If banks need are so secretive with this number, then Capital One just made a major blunder by freely mailing me their own account number when I asked for a cashback redemption check.  Perhaps I can now turn to a life of crime armed with this secret information?

Now I'm wondering what Pedro the lawn guy does with my account number after I give it to him every week.  Heck , I don't even know if that's his real name.  But I'm sure they check for IDs at the check cashing place with bars on the windows that he uses in the bad part of town.

Worse yet, I just remembered that USAA makes me write my OWN account number on checks I deposit... on the back along with the endorsement.  So whoever paid me now has my account number when they get the cancelled check back.  I think we're all doomed.
