Im remodeling my house and have used my home depot card which only has a SL of 5000. I called because when I went to request a CLI the button took me to a call this number page. So I call the number for CS and I ask the lady if a CLI is a HP. She tells me yes so I explain that I want to request a CLI because everytime I buy something at the store I am stuck paying sometimes 3 to 4 times in a month to keep the UT down. I told her if I have to do this all the time I might as well use another card and close this account. She replies to me, "So you want to close card?" So I tried to explain to her that I was just trying to make a point as to my request. She kept talking about closing the card and acted like she didnt understand what I was saying so out of frustration I just hung up. The next morning I went to the local Home Depot and bought a couple doors and hardware and the card worked just fine. I went to go pay it yesterday because it was getting close to $1000 and see that my account is closed. I called and talked a different lady who told me that I requested the card to be closed back in December of 2017. I then tried to tell her that I have been using this card like crazy for the past month and everything was fine. The conversation from the other night didnt even come up. Then a specialist came on the phone and said that I requested the card be canceled and that once a disclosure has been read you cant reopen the account. I couldnt stop laughing! I finally just said ok, just keep it closed and paid it off.
On a good note I have a Lowes card already that had a 12k SL. So today after all this happened I requested a CLI and not only was it a SP, but they granted the request and gave me a CLI of 25K.
I was shopping for a new miter saw and stand to build some custom furniture. I wont be buying that from Home Depot I guess. LOL
Well that sucks OP...but happy to hear that Lowe's picked up where Home Depot left off.
If I could offer a PSA...when calling a lender (especially when speaking to front line reps) just simply ask for what you want and leave it at that. The backstory of what you want, why you want it, etc is *usually* a waste of time. These folks typically don't have the authority to do anything other than what the computer spits out when they punch in information.
Don't bother mentioning account closures as a means of getting what you want because it probably isn't going to work and doesn't make the representative one bit of difference. Don't mention account closure as they probably don't care if you go anyway. A lender doesn't care about your desire to have low utilization reporting and the representative probably doesn't even have a clue as to what you're talking about anyway. Typically they care that you use their card and pay your bill on time..and sometimes that isn't even enough to keep them happy.
In my experience with Citi, calling versus submitting the CLI request online doesn't yield a different result. If they're going to HP you just let the system do its thing. At least then you don't have to worry about a human misunderstanding what you're trying to communicate. After all, they're just punching in the same information that the online request is going to ask you for and then give you the same result as the automated system would have given you.
To the OP, Congrats on the Lowe's increase and enjoy all the excitement that comes with home remodeling.

+1...bolded portion. So, technically, not really "unauthorized".
On the plus side, Lowe's was flexible enough to accommodate your needs.

+100
I'm glad everything turned out well in the end, but this is a fantastic reminder to be direct and stick to what you want when chatting with CSRs.
Small talk and extra detail isn't necessary - they genuinely don't care - and it can sometimes confuse matters (especially if you ever mention the word 'close').
Congrats on your Lowe's increase... my own Lowe's has served me well!
To be honest I didnt really care if they did or didnt shut it down. $5000 SL is riduculous to begin with for such a big project. I could have just paid cash which is what I was doing anyway by PIF every week. Also when I talked to the rep the next day and explained everything, she told me that once a disclosure was read to me the account was closed. I hung up because she was heavily accented and did not understand english enough to know what I was saying, and I kept trying to explain to her that I was just making a point as to why I needed an increase. So I never did hear a disclosure and probably wouldnt have understood her to begin with. But thank you all for your input. It was more of a funny story for me than anything I couldnt believe it happened.
