Its also misleading to suggest that churning for bonuses can never possibly get you in trouble. It can absolutely get you in trouble.
But it isn't wrong.
I completely agree. I have no moral objection to it in the same way I am not morally opposed to card counting (which I actively do). I don't want to do it because I don't want my account closed by someone who (thankfully) extended me credit. The difference for me is I value credit a lot more than being thrown out of a casino.
It's also hilariously false to claim that no one has ever had their accounts closed for exploiting sign up bonuses. There are so many counterexamples to this that I would rather close my own accounts than enumerate them all. Lol.
@heyarrnold wrote:It depends on how much you value the rewards that each card gives and their reward structure. Let's take the PRG as an example. If you value MR points at .1c, you'd need 17,500 MR points to just break even with the annual fee. Unless you're MS, putting a lot of spend on the 3x category of the card, you'd have to spend at most $17.5k on the card to generate 17.5K points. For some people this does not make sense. And some, like myself, at times apply for certain cards for their sign up bonuses. And if the card, once the annual fee is about to hit, no longer generates value for me, well, I have no problem dumping the card. Unless a fee waiver or a retention offer is given of course
Could have not said it better!
the AF that i can justify is my CSP i put a lot of money through it.
I think my gold rewards is my main card but it is my CSP
Great converstaion on both sides of the issue. I just ok with paying AF as I am using my credit cards to pay for things that I would otherwise just pay cash for and get points, miles and cash back depending on which card that I use.
Of course now that I am in VA and not TX anymore, I have to pay all sorts of state income tax and property tax and this tax and that tax.
Counting down till the day I can leave VA and their stupid taxes behind and move back to TX.
So I pay my taxes via my credit cards for rewards right now, might as well get back as much as I can while I can.

You answered your own question in the broader sense. People, situations, preferences, etc vary. All those things can and do change over time as well. Never assume that yours are universal no matter what the topic. There are all sorts of possiblities when it comes to the specifics but does it really matter what every possibility might be? Do what works for you. What others should do is for them to determine.

Yepper, and I glad I asked and got the responses I did, allows me to read them and do my own research and determine the best course of action for myself going forward! I value each and every comment as I look at the people who posted here as SMEs on the issue.

So fees for using ccs to pay taxes are low enough that it is still worthwhile?

For me at this current place in time and location, it will work for me. When I was in Texas, no, it would not, simply because TX does not have the "tax to death" mentality that VA has, a much better run state IMO, but off topic!
