I just got off the phone with a CSR at NFCU. He told me that it wasn't enough that I was getting a check from the VA. I am not eligible because I am not receiving anything from the Department of Defense; two totally different federal agencies. Plus I am not a retiree.
So I guess I received my answer. That is if the CSR was well trained and well informed.
Perhaps one of these days they will change their standards a bit.

That stinks. Pretty sure that if anyone deserves a chance to join it would be you and other disabled veterans. I think I'm going to write a letter.
It's disappointing but not the end of the world. Each organization has the right to decide who to let in or exclude.
My life is not changed because I'm not eligible.
I'm a NFCU and I just joined PenFed too you might want to try and go that route might be worth a shot not sure if there is a huge diffrence but who know's?

I've considered PenFed but just haven't followed through. I try to never say "never" but I'm almost certain I won't apply for any more cards in the future. I'm pretty satisfied with my credit profile now.
But I won't close the door completely!

@seigex wrote:Sorry just skimmed through the OP real quick.. if he received any kind of funding (annuity) for disability that works too.. my dad gets $100/mo for high blood pressure and that was enough to get me in.
UPDATE: post moot since she confirmed retirement
Did he happen to also be a retiree? I ask because one of the eligibility questions asked is: Are you a retiree receiving an annuity from the DoD or National Guard?
This leads me to believe it's not enough to draw disability but that you must also be a retiree. But I could be wrong.
I guess I need to contact them. I'm rated by the VA as 100% disabled and have always thought I wasn't eligible for membership because I meet none of the listed criteria.
that question is misleading when you compare to other places on the site: All DoD civilian employees—including retirees and annuitants and also on the eligability wizard on the hover-over for that question "This includes all retirees and annuitants of the below*: (goes on to list all services). My dad has received a $100 monthly annuity since he left the military in the early 80's and was approved for membership... =) so I think you're good to go...

Totally worth a call. I was looking through the enrollment forms for the post 911 gi bill and noted one of the chapters describing va disability benefits said something about annuity benefit and being eligible for voc assistance and career services if you receive va annuity payments for disability, but I never connected the dots. I always thought of annuities as retirement fund paymentsI guess what confuses me is the definition(s) of annuity:
The annual payment of an allowance or income. The right to receive this payment or the obligation to make this payment.A contract or agreement by which one receives fixed payments on an investment for a lifetime or for a specified number of years. This doesn't seem to be the same as a monthly disablity payment but NFCU might not make that distinction.
That fits to me, you will receive your disability payment for the rest of your life, and you have a right to it as being a disabled vet. And DoD has an obligation to send it to you. I left without disability although I'll be seeking out the VA soon to change that, but for the purposes of eligability it was enough to get my dad on to sponser me and the HUGE CL's that go with it

guess I should wait until the end before I respond Hmmm.. well that's interesting... we registered online so I wonder if that'll come back to bite me... thanks for the call I might have to call just to make sure I'm good to go so it don't screw me over in the future

I said something very much like that about 3 months ago! After I received my AmEx Platinum I though no way I ever need anything else. Then I see the super savings on the PenFed Platinum with the 5% gas cash back and here I am. I'll say it again though I really dont think I need anything else! haha
you can also join if you are residing at the same address as an active member (active military or not)
