Re: Hoping I can join NFCU...Question about eligibility?

UPDATE: So I called NFCU and the rep said that since my grandfather is deceased and was not a member, I am not able to join. I don't understand the reasoning behind this, my grandpa still served in WWII and Korean War, and was a retired marine, if this membership is open for direct family of those who served....it shouldn't matter if he is deceased, that doesn't change my relationship to him and the fact that he was a retired marine. Sadly, my mother and I didn't know the benefits of joining this credit union compared to others soon enough. I have since joined USAA as a partial member, but have not applied or opened any accounts yet. Would appreciate any input on next step to getting a CC through them. Should I open a checking acct. with them first? I don't really have a need for it, I currently have free checking with Chase and have had good experiences with them thus far...my goal is to get a credit card with at least a 3k CL. In march my experian credit score was 717 but has dropped some because of new lowes credit purchase but no new negatives and no late payments for 2 yrs. now...my Walmart says 640 in July, but always is the lowest of my scores. But have 6 hard inquiries...what are my chances?? Thanks everyone! This forum has given me such great insight and guidance on how to mold my credit into what I want it to be!

Starting Score: 6??
Current Score: Walmart TU 640-7/12, Experian 717-3/12

Sorry didn't read through every response. Did your grandfather retire (ie with a pension) or was a veteran? Not eligible if just veteran, but eligible if he was "lifer.". Even nfcu reps seem mixed up at times. Best way if he was lifer is to get his info such as armed forces Id number. Worse thing is when nfcu security dept comes a knocking for proof and cancels cards and asks for immediate repayment because you weren't really eligible.

Yes he was a lifer....retired marine and received pension, etc. So what do I say when I tell them I don't have an access code? And when they check his name he isn't listed as a member and they tell me he has to join first? So basically with some reps that won't matter....as long as I give them his name and info, that is good enough? I have no problem providing proof of his service and my proof of relationship, my mom has all that info. Sounds like it boils down to the person you get on the phone...anyone have a contact rep by chance that I could speak with that would process my membership??? Could I be that lucky? Smiley Happy

Just make sure you have all his info and call and join. Work out membership details first. Once a member, then app.

Re: Hoping I can join NFCU...Question about eligibility?

Just some FYI info for others wondering. My DH is a disabled veteran. He was honorably discharged & currently rated at 20%. He receives a small disability check each month. He just called to check eligibility and was told since he doesn't hold a current military ID, then he can not join. We can't get on the PX either because you have to be a higher %. I had read others post they joined & were disabled veterans. I guess they were 100% or something.

Re: Hoping I can join NFCU...Question about eligibility?

I called at one point and was informed service connected disabilities aren't annuitants.

One of my cousins is retired from the reserves. Might give her a call soon.

I'm rated 100% and I'm not eligible either.

Just being disabled (at any rating) is not enough to meet their requirements.

Re: Hoping I can join NFCU...Question about eligibility?

So here's what I find confusing about this: I am a disabled vet. On my DD-214, my "Type of Separation" is listed as "Retirement".

I don't receive a retiree's pension from the DoD because I opted to receive disability compensation through the VA instead. But that sure doesn't change the fact that my official separation status is Retiree.

I am supposed to hear back from NFCU tomorrow when the go-to folks (beyond the CSRs who answer the phones) are in.

I'll be happy to send them a copy of my DD-214.

I also have Plan B in the works: My nephew is Army National Guard. I'm coercing his father, my brother, to join NFCU. LOL!

Re: Hoping I can join NFCU...Question about eligibility?

I ended up calling them today when I got off work. I told the CSR that the person assisting me with membership registration wasn't sure that I was eligible, and that someone would call me today. I can be hard to reach during the day, so I thought I'd call.

The CSR asked me some questions: Are you a military retiree? I responded I am, and that my DD-214 says my Type of Separation is Retired. She also asked if I have a military ID card so that I can go on base to PXs and such. I told her that I don't believe I have one, but that I wouldn't have had much use for one where I live as there are no bases, so I'm not sure if one was offered or if I ever had one.

Keep in mind, folks, I was in the Army back in the 1970s. I don't remember much of my out-processing or anything.

She seemed to feel that I will be fine. She helped me log in to the site for the first time, and then we opened an EveryDay Checking in addition to the Share Savings (which is where your $5 membership goes). My debit card and other account goodies are on their way to me.

However, I didn't just fall off the turnip truck, so I remained dubious. I guess I've read too many tales about people getting set up with NFCU and opening accounts and getting credit cards and such only to be contacted by their fraud unit and losing their membership, etc. I didn't go into detail with the CSR, but I told her that it concerns me that there is even a hint of a question about my eligibility, and that I'll feel more confident after some time has passed.

She said, "Even if you are contacted by the auditors, just tell them about your DD-214 and that your status on that form says Retired. You can send it in if they ask for it."

So that's where it stands now. I wonder how long it would take their audit folks to contact me. I would like to direct deposit my disability check there and move some more money over, but guess what?  I'M DUBIOUS.
