How Do I get a Chase CC ?

Hello myFICO community,

As the title says, my goal is to get approved for a chase credit card (freedom unlimted or freedom flex). Here is a bit of background, I was  young , reckless, etc etc and ultimately ran intro trouble and ended up settling a cap1 card for less than full and another one actually still owe balance on, the first one was finalized in 2019 and the latter actually never did anything about it so I guess its still showing owed balance correct ? but its been since 2019 since that one was also shut...this is likely why I am not getting approved by chase correct ? how helpful would it be if I settle the outstanding one as well ? I've also thought about doing a pay for delete on both of those (or at least the outstanding one) I've read that in 7 years charge offs will fall off so am I just better off waiting 2 more years? I have w2 job, and bank with chase , just would like to have a credit card with them too. Any input helps . TY

Chase is pretty conservative and any charge offs or other bad marks are certainly going to hurt you.  Since it doesn't sound like you ever burned them, I would suggest you settle any outstanding old debts however you can.  If CapOne still owns the debt, I don't believe I've ever heard of them offering pay for delete, but I could certainly be wrong about that.  In your shoes, I would clean up the outstanding items on your report and then talk with a banking associate the next time you're in a branch; that will be your best bet to get a card.

FWIW, some of us did in fact burn Chase and ultimately got back in, I burned them for north of ten-grand in my 2015 Chapter 13 and got back in with them 13 months ago, but by then my credit reports were pristine and my scores were 800(ish).  What is interesting is the very morning before I opened up my Chase checking and savings account, I checked their preapproval site and the only account type which popped up was a savings account; two hours later I was approved for a CSP, and ended up with a CFU six months later.

Chapter 13:

  • Burned: AMEX, Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo, and South County Bank (now Bank of Southern California)
  • Filed: 26-Feb-2015
  • MoC: 01-Mar-2015
  • 1st Payment (posted): 23-Mar-2015
  • Last Payment (posted): 07-Feb-2020
  • Discharged: 04-Mar-2020
  • Closed: 23-Jun-2020

I categorically refuse to do AZEO!

Either do a PFD(if possible) or just pay it so they don't sue you or wait the 7 years approx for it to go away.  They(Chase) likely will not approve you with this mark on your credit report as you echoed shows bad credit behavior and what makes it think it will not happen to them as well. Best of luck.

I would imagine you're going to have to get rid of the negatives in your report, one way or the other. As your scores and profile improve, if you stay under 5/24, you should start seeing preapprovals when you're online in the "Just for You" section.

You may be better served going after a cap one card for now, while you work on your credit. Cap1 offers some great cards to folks with less than stellar credit files.

I have also seen data points here that suggest Chase likes seeing a different lender give you a big CL before they give you one.

Re: How Do I get a Chase CC ?

hey all, sorry for mia - thank you for all the responses....just did my free annual CR from the website....it appears that my 2 cap1 adverse accounts fall off 7/26 ....one was settled for less than full and another one still has a balance (the instituion never came for me i guess thats why i guess i kind of forgot about it and went on my with life, actually the same institution granted me new credit about 2 years ago and even raised my limit and now that account is in good standing)....my question once again is - should I just wait 2 years and hope those adverse marks truly fall off ? or settle the open one and try to get a PFD as well , but then what about the one that I settled years ago, its with the same instituon so should I settle the open one and ask for PFD on that one and the one that was already been settled ? this is frustating...I went to chase and explained my situation and the banker was basically clueless....

Re: How Do I get a Chase CC ?

TBH you are not going to get approved for a Chase card  anytime soon

Concentrate on the attainable and bide your time and before you know it you get what you want.

I think everyone already touched on where you should start, but since no one mentioned it, I will. If your goal is a CFF/CFU, likely may not happen right now, but you could try for the Chase Freedom Rise which aims at builders/ lower score profiles and maybe in due time this will have helped strengthen your relationship with them.

Have you considered the Chase Rise card?
