How are AMEX annual fees prorated after an upgrade?

Let’s say your account anniversary is March 1st and you upgrade the account a week later.  Would you still have to pay the full annual fee even if it isn’t billed till 45 days later (according to the terms) or would it be prorated from when it is actually billed?

It seems like you would have to pay the full fee since the actual upgrade falls in the same month of your account anniversary but I’m not sure if it is prorated monthly or daily. Also the terms does say that it would be prorated.

Those with experience upgrading to annual fee cards can you weigh in on how your fees were prorated?

I recently upgraded my BCE to BCP. Here is the disclosure regarding AF:

Approximately 45 days after your account is upgraded, you will be charged a
prorated Annual Membership Fee for your new Card based on the time remaining until your next
account anniversary date. You will also receive a prorated refund for any annual fee paid on your
previous Card.

So basically the annual fee would be prorated from 45 days + the difference between your actual upgrade date and your account anniversary? In other words, you would only be paying for approximately 10 months the 1st year.

I am most definitely not the source of record, but from eyeballing my statements, while there may have been a delay in the new fee posting I think the fee was prorated as of the requested upgrade date.
