The time is approaching for me to cancel my PRG. I'd like to call to do online chat or call to cancel but I want to try to get a retention offer. Do they always offer one or should I say something to get one? I don't want to seem deseperate for one but at the same time, I'd really like to try to get it.
Any suggestions?
I would tell them that you're having a hard time justifying the annual fee of the PRG, and simply ask if there is anything they can do about it. They might lower it, but they're probably not going to waive it completely.

I don't understand. If you would really like to stay with the PRG (which is what a retention offer is supposed to do), then why is it "time to cancel" it? It's either time to cancel it, or you want to stay.
That's the first question. Do you like your PRG? Does it give you enough benefits to make it worth keeping it? If no, just trying to get a retention offer won't make much of a difference. If yes, then you want to ask yourself what is the maximum you are willing to pay to keep it?
Nothing wrong with trying to get a retention offer, but Amex just upped their game on the PRG - adding a 2x dining category and nixing the FTF. They raised the AF along with that. That was a calculated move. I doubt they will just waive your fee to keep you.

I can certainly do without my PRG but I would consider keeping it if I got a retention offer. I have other cards that benefit me more, but if I could get an offer to keep the card then it may be worth keeping for me.

Well, since you are the one seeking out the offer, just what kind of retention offer will be enough to retain you? Have you given it any specific thought? If you are looking for a lower AF, exactly what AF will be enough to keep you? If you want bonus MR points, how many at a minimum?

Not true at all. It all comes down to how much business do you give to AMEX. I have had retention offers for my platinum every single year since 2012.
OP, Online chat is useless for retention offers, call customer service and have them route your call to retention manager. All my retention calls ended up at the same location. (Jacksonville, FL)

I took an educated guess that if the OP isn't finding the PRG worth keeping with the current AF then they are probably not giving that much business to Amex. The "you" in my sentence is specifically the OP, not a generic "you".

Well they get business from me with my ED and SPG. Not so much my PRG...yet...maybe...
