Are you guys calling the number on the back of the card for the automated phone increase?

Yes.
I had my Discover for about a year and a half with a $1000 limit before I called in to ask for a CLI. I asked for $5000, they did a HP and I got it. I didn't use the card much, other than when the 5% categories benefitted me and I usually paid in full, but would occasionaly let a small balance report just to vary it up. About two months ago, I put a large purchase on it and am making payments over my minimum (with the plan to pay it off by March) and I just got an auto CLI to $6000. I was suprised, so you just really don't know.
So far, I haven't been able to get any of these tricks to work. Considering my 1.5k credit line, i've put a lot of money through it and paid before the statement cut. The phone system doesn't offer the CLI, and the chat they said it was fed law to check peoples credit with a hard pull before the extend larger lines of credit. I was like, um...ok, i know that's NOT true because I just got 3x amex cli last month on a sp . So ya, i'll just keep trying everymonth. It will HAPPEN.

Or accept the reality that there are some of us that Discover really doesn't like, which I'm okay with - I don't much like them either. While they're busy sending out Starbucks cards and auto-CLIs to their favoured customers, there are some of us who get mediocre to downright rude customer service and none of the perks. Their loss... I barely ever use my card.

Hi KittenAttack
Your experience with Disco is an exact carbon copy of the same results i get every single time with them. My limit is been stuck at 1.4k since opening in Aug 2013. It originated from a mailer pre-approval the same with a puke Crap1 GM card with an even WORSE starting limit that is never seen any CLI either. I went thru all the posted routines and such but always a dead end with these 2. Currently they both are resting comfortably in a dark secluded SD that they both earned

I used to push as often as possible thru it for months etc., but just like Crap1 it soon become nothing less than a total nusance and to top it off equally ridiculous trying for a simple CLI just for some breathing room.
I also arrived at the same conclusion that Discover picks favorites and the rest don't matter. It's noteworthy to make mention i was a recipient of their kinda "bait n switch" routine and ended up with NO 0% intro promo PLUS a warmly inviting 22.99% APR.
Both cards will be summarily jettisoned at some point in 2015
@takeshi74 wrote:Regardless of creditor CLI's are determined by one's credit and income. You can't rely on anecdotal evidence for CLI tactics. People get CLI's with and without balances. I was carrying a balance on the intro offer with my Discover it at around 3 months when I requested a CLI and they nearly doubled the limit with a hard pull Usage may play a part but it's also not going to make or break a CLI on its own. All of the standard factors apply -- see my second link below.

Unless a creditor has specifically stated "too much available credit" this isn't likely to help. Closing a high limit card is likely to increase utilization. This thread is linked in the Helpful Threads sticky in this subofurm:

Utilization (Amounts Owed) is the second biggest factor:

A BT doesn't change overall utilization and this tactic is likely to max the card that is being BT'ed to. Both overall and individual utilization matter. If one wants the best odds then reducing utilization would be the way to address balances. To optimize prior to an app/CLI allow only one balance to report at 10% or less. I've never bothered to do so with any of my CLI's but if one wants to eke out every possible point then that may help.
I have applied twice this year. Paltry $500 increases each time. HP at that. No derogs, low util and low inqs. Go figure. It would be my #2 card and probably see 5k+ a month if they upped it.

Don't be discouraged by the negative comments, OP. I helped my DH do an 8K BT to a DiscoverIT back in May. He received a 10K line. We have put NO spend on it yet, just massive payments monthly. Last night at the suggestion of a great member, I called the automated number and inctreased the line to 14K. It is a soft pull when you use that.
