I was going to staple all of the receipts to the matching CC statement. But then I thought, what if I need to find a receipt for a store... I won't know *which* credit card I used and it will be harder to find the receipt that way.
I'd love to hear what others are doing and how you "file" your receipts. Thanks!
Why would want to keep receipts when everything shows up on a statement? I'm not trying to be rude, I really just don't understand and would like to know if I'm missing something important.

These days, it's probably ok to trash them. The only time you'd need them is if you were ever in court and needed them entered in as evidence for some kind of dispute.

Wouldn't the online statements suffice?

Well, if you have to return something, the credit card statements do not itemize. Some stores cannot look up your receipts with just your credit card either - you need the actual receipt.

There are times when you might need a "physical" receipt to ensure a restaurant's copy isn't or hasn't been doctored. For example, you leave a $10.00 tip, and an unscrupulous waiter changes the "1" to a "4."

This is exaclty why I put a giant line all the way across to the edge of the reciept (like on a check) after I fill in the tip and total.
Thanks everyone, I hadn't thought of those situations.

I do that as well.
Well, there are special scanners that will make scan directly to searchable PDFs.
I throw 'em into a shoebox. If I need to find one, it's time to dig.
I just keep whatever I can deduct at the end of the year.
Mainly: medical expenses, education expenses, etc...
