Chicken bones?  Astrology? Maybe they take the last few digits of your phone number, subtract it from their closing value on the London Stock Exchange, and multiply that by the number of Knighthoods handed out that day, and then divide by Pi?

Re: How does Barclays decide?

My guess is that it is pretty much all of the above answers combined,. Meaning, probably a little bit of it all plays a factor, which leads me to say.....who knows anymore.

3647 (last 4 of phone number of most popular phone number according to google) - 179.95 (closing figure on stock exchange) = 3467.05    3647.05 times knighthood today (average of 7.12 at 2,600/yr) = 25,966.996 - then divided by pi (3.1459) brings us to $8,266. (rounded to nearest dollar)!
