Im talking about Open, In-Use, Pay Monthly Cards and what's their purpose... SD'd Cards with 0 Balances do not count. You can also count LOCs as well if your use it regularly.
I've come to hate having to Manage/Pay on more than 4 cards/ TLs in any one month.... Which is why I consolidated most of my Cards on to my Duck Card, much easier work down the balances this way.
Right now my "In-Use" TLs are:
- Duck Card - For Recent BT's (6k in total BTs)
- Discover It - Everyday Spending Card (PIF every month before Statement Cut)
- Chase Ink Classic - Auto Bill Payments Card (PIF every month before Statement Cut)
- Walmart Discover - DD is AU, let her use the account while in College, I have no use for it otherwise (PIF sometimes before, sometime after SC)
- BML - Only used for Big Ticket Items where I can get the 6 months NP/NI deals (POT but always PIF before NP/NI deal expires)
- Amazon Store Credit - Big Amazon Shopper for the little things needed (PIF within 2 weeks of purchases, never have a high balance)
I wish I had better cards. Waiting for our refinance to close before apping for some better ones.
Cap 1 Platinum - Contacted EO about a month ago to have %1.5 reward added so this is basically the only card I use right now. We've ran about $2,000 through it so far. Wish we could have been getting %3-%5 rewards on that amount though....
We have another Cap 1 that has no rewards which we basically don't use. It's my DW and I'm an AU and then we have a handful of retail cards that we only use occasionally to keep them active.
I'm hoping for a BCP, Freedom and Discover IT next month.
Currently I'm managing around 8 - 9 cards (actively using them) at the same time with the help of a spreadsheet. They're all in my sig.
14. And while this can be a pita, I believe it's really helped my credit building journey and score. Not only has it shown I can manage credit wisely and responsibly, it's built a thick file. Thicker files take less of hit when changes occur, such as adding new accounts. As older closed accounts roll over reports, I add one or two here and there. Yes, I take a hit for AAoA, but I believe I eventually benefit from it. I've got the cards I want, for the most part. Now, I plan on just growing those lines and trimming a few of the rebuilders. (Mainly, rebuilders with annual fees). A few I've let them close due to inactivity, as I don't need them. Annual fee cards don't...imagine that! I have one left that's on the chopping block. I think I'll be gardening for awhile, as my progression has me waning for the 800 club!
I also use a spreadsheet. Sometimes I use my cc's for the rewards. Sometimes for the 0% APR. Sometimes, just to keep them active.
9 each has a purpose if not they will be closed.
10 including BML and each has a purpose.
