When taking a look at my EQ report this morning, I noticed that I had 20 inq over the past 2 yrs, which factor into my credit score. I know had I known about this forum 2 years ago, the number would be around 5 max.
Regardless, how many is too many?

YMMV ~ You'll get different answers to this question. Some creditors are more inquiry sensitive than others.
As a general rule of thumb I don't like having any more than the Jets have SB rings.
Unfortunately this doesn't allow me much flexibility.

Funny Dr. Smith....
Still no real answer yet, this should be an interesting thread I assume. From my initial search, Ive seen as few as 2 per 2 years to 10 per year, if the majority came from a major purchase (i.e mortgage or car)
inquiries stop counting against your score after a year. usually most lenders dont care if they are older than a year. some dont want to see any in the last 6 mos. some people here get denied due to too many inquiries then are able to get a successful recon. sooooo on your eq report how many inquires do you have in the past year? in the past 6 mos?
There's no concrete answer. Some lenders run away from too many inquiries. In the same vein, a lot of people keep asking until someone says yes and care more about new credit than how potential lenders judge inquiries.
I try looking at it this way: If someone wanted to borrow money, how many inquiries would I think was normal in 2 years? There's just a certain point where it looks like people have a problem. True, there could be an awesome reason for every app, mortgage process, or even car shopping. At the end of the day I'd still think someone who applied for 40 credit cards had issues.
One more than your threshold for the pain in the lowering of your FICO score and AA by your other CCCs.
Seriously, I have seen as many as 15 points for just an INQ and that doesn't count any hit for AAoA or a new account reporting.
Since there are so many variables here I am not a big fan of app sprees. If you have to apply for new credit, try one at a time and wait for the CC to report and then check your TU and EQ FICO scores here.

IMO, more than 5 per year seems high to me.
