Recently, last year? Synch has been using Trended data (VS4 scores)

Does opening a new acct. affect VS4?

Do balances affect VS4?

VantageScore reacts violently towards new accounts.

Keep in mind that shutdowns don't occur only due to non-use.  The current credit limit decreases or account closures are due to banks limiting their risk with customers who are seen as higher risk as economic conditons tighten up with the pandemic.   If you acquire a lot of cards with limits many times your documented income, you could also be subject to adverse action, especially if you ever allow balances to post on multiple cards.  In today's climate however, it could happen just based on your overall credit profile including income, debts, credit score, any derogatories, revolving credit available, etc.   Underwriters look at a lot of factors when they make these decisions.  Using the card may help but it's not enough in all cases to prevent shutdown.  It may not matter if you use the account or pay on time or in full.

@Anonymous why  not? If I make over 500$ - 3000$ a month at 10 different stores for my business, why is it a bad idea if those store cards offer great reward? We're talking about 5000 - 30000 in total... I won't get shut down because I will use the cards every month. As for the limits, whatever I get is better then 0...

Could you further elaborate on this?  I'm not sure if you meant that you would be making $500-3000 per month between collecting rewards or discounts, or if you mean that you're making $500-3000 per month in profit for reselling products purchased at these stores.  If that's money gained back in rewards and/or through savings, that is significant.  If it's just a matter of buying power at these stores and you're making that in profit, you would probably want to examine each store for potentially higher rewards with a more traditional bankcard.

Not all store cards are created equally.  There are many cards that offer little incentive to use them after an initial purchase, sometimes as little as 10% off or $10 off your first purchase, so just a single bankcard offering a $500 signup bonus can bring greater rewards than dozens of store cards combined.  Even some very popular and widely useful store cards offer nothing in the way of rewards, but rather extended promotional APR periods - the Home Depot card is a good example of this.  A gas card would be an example of where a traditional bankcard would likely be a better option - using $3/gallon and a 12 gallon tank as an example, 5 cents off per gallon offered by many gas cards would save you $0.60, while one of many cards offering 3% cash back on fuel would give you $1.08 in cash back - certainly not worth opening a fuel card for lower rewards, and any 2% card in this example would still earn more than the gas card.

A majority of store cards are issued by just three lenders: Synchrony, Comenity, and CBNA.  All will be sensitive to a large number of cards opened in a short period of time.  Regardless of how much they are being used, Synchrony and Comenity both have track records of closing accounts when they deem your risk to be high, and this happens quite often after a number of store cards are opened with them.

There is nothing wrong with acquiring store cards if they benefit you.  But acquiring many of them in a short period of time and from the same lender is a recipe for credit disaster, particularly if one does not have a very well-aged and thick profile that can absorb those hits.

Re: How many store cards can i get?

One thing I haven't seen anyone mention is the negative affect it will have on your total credit exposure, which seems to be especially important right now.  There is a metric they look at that is basically a multiplier of your income to how much credit you have available.  So let's say you have total credit limits of $200,000 and you make $50,000 then your total exposure is 4x your income.  Different creditors have different levels of comfort, but ALL of them have lowered that number in the past few months.  So if you rack up 2x your income on store cards you're killing yourself when you start applying for regular cards.

Am i limited on the amount of store cards that i can hold at once. For example, is there a limit to the amount of Synchrony issued cards that i can have? Also, is there a limit to the amout of store cards i can get from the same issueing bank during a timeframe?

I'm asking because i know that other credit card issuers have restrictions on the amount of cards you can hold and the amount of cards you can be approved for in a timeframe.

To get my rebuild going this year I started with a VS store card and got a 1k limit. I was shocked, as I had not had a CC in probably over a decade. Then I got a Cap One Plat on the steps program with SL of $300 and went for another SCT store card from WS for a toy limit of $250. It has been like 4 months and I already regret it. I feel like I am not taken seriously when trying to break into bankcards.

Not to mention the fact that $250 at WS is a joke. It didn't even cover the legitimate purchase I was trying to make. I will never see a CLI from them because my SageStream report is permanently locked. What a waste of a card that didn't even cost a HP.

I got my SO a secured Cap One and he has already been able to get a Discover secured card. I still cannot get pre-approved for that or any other major player card. Not even a secured card from them. My scores are even a little better than my SO's, some way better like on some of my bankcard scorecards.

Also, store cards are charge cards and even if you had 3 or more, trying AZEO to bump your scores will never happen. You have to have a bankcard. It is even seperated on your credit reports that they are different and are in fact scores a little differently. It will not actually be helping you "build" your credit very much!

You will end up doing whatever you want, we are just here giving advice. I would *not* do it. I prefer the versatility of being able to use a CC wherever I need just like a debit card. With a store card I have to make purchases that maybe I don't want or need to make sure they don't get closed for lack of use. Inwill never buy $1k in bras and panties. That is crazy. WS is a bit overpriced, but have an ok rewards program, but how much kitchenware do I need? Especially sub-$250? I travel for work across the country and can't be carrying a load of kitchenware! If it has been the Visa, I would have been "ok" with that, but you don't find out until you app.

If you are buying stuff to sell, remember there is no guarantee it will sell. I have been selling for nearly 2 decades online. It is hit or miss and most people want to buy for less.

Good luck and I hope you find that there are lors of great building cards that even offer rewards that are majors and can be used for your everyday needs instead of specialty wants.

ALL of them?

I think this is the part where *Cite your sources* becomes an important part of conversation.

Going by memory, but this reminds me of the scene from Terminator 2 when John Connor is asked how many police have come and he says something like "All of them I think".

Re: How many store cards can i get?

Other than a credit union here or there, members of this community have never really reported issues with overall available credit.  Certainly individual lenders have their limits on how much they will extend to an individual borrower, but many of us here have multiples of our incomes in available revolving credit.  That has not not prevented being granted additional credit on my end.

Re: How many store cards can i get?

I have the Amazon store card, Target store card, and Lowe's store card. I don't see an issue with obtaining multiple store cards as long as they are businesses you believe will be around long term and that you can buy from occassionally throughout the year to keep active.
