Sorry for the double post, but I just want to say, jsucool76, decided to talk to the Capital One online chat, just for fun, initially, to see if they would approve me of a PC to Quicksilver. After three months, I thought I had no chance, especially since I had no offers, but I thought, eh, since there is no hard pull involved, I thought why not? lol

However, after chatting with a couple reps, they ended up upgrading me to Quicksilver with no AF in the end! Smiley Surprised I couldn't believe it! I get my new card and account in 7-10 business days. I'm simply ecstatic right now! Smiley Very Happy

CONGRATS! That is how they did the PC for me =] Online chat 2 weeks into my account existing. Haha.

Thank you so much~! Also, wow! Makes me wish I had done it sooner, ha ha. Smiley LOL Thanks for giving me the reassurance that I could do it! Heart

Thank you for the congratulations! I'm glad that I made a smart move, especially one I've wanted to do for awhile~!

Hmm, I must say, you are making me very tempted to pull the trigger on that Walmart credit card, lol! I didn't know that other credit lenders could see your limit(s) and then try to match up the offer, so, the fact that the Walmart credit card gives CLI's every four months is incredibly enticing, although, I still think I'll wait for the full year to see where my options are after that. From what it looks like, you migrated to a Walmart Discover card and the Discover It is what I want as my second card, so, I'm hoping I'll have the success of other newbies and start off with a high CL with Discover and they'll be good to me, since I don't have any other lines. Although, if they start me off at a toy limit when I app for them next year, I'll probably go ahead and try with that Walmart card. Thanks for all your advice so far! Heart You've made me feel less edgy about denials and inquiries, but I think I'll still play it safe for awhile, at least until the year is over.

I was hoping that you would chime in with your input! I aspire to be a great cash back ninja like you some day, ha ha! Smiley WinkThanks for all the wonderful advice you have given me!  Heart

Yeah, definitely going to wait the full 12 months and let the inquiries die down. I'm definitely not going to go out and ring up a bunch of store cards either, even if a BestBuy one does look tempting some times, lol. I know a start is a start, but I don't spend enough, let alone in one place, to justify getting a store card, so, no worries about that! I don't want to wrack up too many inquiries and new credit if it's going to scare the prime lenders away. I've heard mortgage companies are a bit more apprehensive about clients who have a ton of store cards too, but I could be wrong about this. That and yup yup, just trying to build credit and get some rewards, not trying to do any over-spending here, captain!

Also, it's not so much that I don't want to have all those awesome cash back cards, I just don't think I'd be able to use them all since I don't spend enough. For instance, I'd love to snatch up a Huntington Voice and a US Bank Cash +, but the former requires one to be within the region of their institutions (unless you get an invite) and I think the latter is a stricter lender. That and being a broke college student will probably start me off with lower CL's than if I wait for getting an actual career based job. That an allowing the other lines of credit to age a bit would probably put me at an advantage later on.The AMEX cards look pretty sweet too, but alas, most of them have sign up bonuses I can't utilize until later. Their SP system and backdating is fantastic, but I can wait on them. Honestly, just having a Sallie Mae would cover 95% of my needs. I'm actually hoping I get the Platinum first so I can get a second one, the World with a higher limit, along the way, ha ha.

Anyway, thank you so much! I'll try my best!

Re: How should this newbie go about applying for more credit cards?

I swear, last double post here, but I just wanted to keep this separate from replies:

In lieu of what Themanwhocan posted, maybe you guys can help me plan my app sprees?

When July or so comes around next year, I think I'll app for:

Discover It

Sallie Mae

The thing is, I'd love to get a BoA BBR, as mentioned before, and maybe I'll throw in the Cash + because I could use it for the cell phone bill, but I think these two are stricter lenders, right? Themanwhocan, were you able to get the Cash + because you had a secured card with them prior? I don't know what my chances will be with being new and all. I wonder if they are like Chase and would prefer two years of history before? Is BoA like this, too, by any chance?

I hear Discover and Barclays can be sensitive to new accounts though. Maybe I could do Discover It and Sallie Mae in July and then BoA BBR and Cash + six months later? I'm not sure. I'm not too afraid of denial, actually, but I'd like to save on inquiries and pulls as much as I can.

Thanks for everything so far, guys! Heart

Well, I didn't try for the Cash+ originally. I went for the Platinum, it was supposed to have higher credit limits. In other words, I didn't know what I was doing, I just had this abstract idea of improving my credit score. I did get a very good starting limit $8500 which probably made everything else easier. They did check my direct deposits and such. I have direct deposits going to 3 different accounts, and so it probably didn't look like i was earning what I told them, until they started adding things up.

My plan was always to have 3 accounts I wanted to try for, and then kept going as long as I didn't get a denial or a horribly low credit limit. But I also didn't want to apply for more than 3 at a time, and then give the credit scores a chance to recover and the new cards a chance to show some usage. The second batch of 3 I did, It was more important for me to get the 2% on everything VISA card (priceline, NLA) than to wait for a potentially better credit limit. As it turns out that was a good decision, as they stopped offering that version of the priceline 2 weeks later.
