I recently got a citi card and it is my first card with an EMV chip on it. Since I got the card I have only encountered two terminals (old navy and family dollar) that have an EMV card reader. Both times when I tried to use the card it didn’t do anything when I inserted my card. After about 10 seconds I felt stupid and just swiped the card like normal. I assumed that these merchants just didn’t have their EMV function turned on yet. Thus my questions:
Is there anything special you need to do to pay with the card using the emv chip?
Out of curiosity where have you successfully used an EMV card in the US?
I have seen some brand new card reader, Tried insert the EMV but none of them read the card.... The casher said wow, they never know the readers have those function..
either the merchant or processor doesn't have it turned on, i am currently looking at payment terminals for work and the sales guy @ our processor said the terminals
are equipped to accept smart cards (EMV). but the programming for accepting EMV cards has not yet been rolled out, but the smart card enabled equipment would be ready to have the software updated when the programming is ready. i don't know if this is true for all processors or not, i wouldn't be suprized if the one i am working with just hasn't rolled it out yet- as they just target small to mid size business
the walmart near my house uses those readers. a couple of weeks ago i tried to use my bofa alaska airlines card by swiping. nothing was happening. the clerk told me to swipe again. then she asked me if my card was "one of those that has the chip thingy" and i said yes. she then said swiping cards with chip will not work. she had me insert the chip in the reader and voila!...asked for signature and purchase was done.
from what the clerk told me, that is now how these cards need to be done for purchases. not sure if it was just for that particular store. but one thing that pissed me off...it scratched up my card really bad! there was a bit of a resistance trying to get the card in the slot so i had to kinda shove it in.

My BOA card has an EMV chip but the mag stripe still works at the local Walmart. The terminals do have chip readers. I've never tried using them.

yeah it was weird...i swiped it twice and nothing...then clerk told me to insert it in the chip reader. i think i will go back there again and try another one of my EMV cards to see if the cashier will tell me to use the chip reader.
Some retailers have EMV terminals but they are inactive right now, so they won't work. However keep in mind that if you swipe an EMV card at a terminal that is activated for EMV, it will prompt you or the cashier to insert chip.

If and when they are properly enabled, that is how the terminals are meant to work: IF a chip is detected, you cannot swipe, otherwise the chip would add no security.
You do need to give the terminal time to read the chip, it takes a little longer than you might expect, so a common mistake on rollout is for people to pull the card out to soon.
