I've been paying $450 a year in annual fees for my Amex Business Platinum Card. I don't use the perks much but I like(d) having it on hand in case I had business travel coming up. I always pay my bills with them super promptly, mostly before the statement even cuts.
The other day on 'check spending power' I was approved for at least $70,000.
Today I'm approved for only $8,800.
After spending 20 minutes or so on the phone I was advised that the reason I'm only approved for $8,800 is that I haven't been using the card much lately.
This is true, but how can I use a card for business travel where I don't even know how much I can spend on it? I can imagine myself on a business trip, in a restaurant or hotel, and having my card declined. This is absolutely ridiculous.
The first opportunity I get I'm going to dump this card and replace it with a business travel card with an actual credit limit upon which I can rely.

I need a business travel card, that's not business... more likely I need the Chase Ink Plus, but I doubt I'll ever survive their 5/24 test I'm too trigger happy
Unfortunately, even with the $70,000 spending power, you risk having the card declined when you travel. While still somewhat uncommon, the number of places that won't take American Express is growing. Not going to steer you in any one direction, but I would recommend you have something that's not American Express as a backup because having it declined just for being an American Express is a when, not an if.
Yeah, that whole unknown fluctuating unstated limit thing with Amex is a pain. I used to run a small business and ran all my business expenses through an Amex platinum business card. The business was seasonal, with the biggest expenses coming during the holidays for product shipping. One year I had about $60-70k charges per month (mostly to Fedex for shipping) in November & December to my Platinum Amex business, which were paid in full by the due date. Then, a couple months later, the card was frozen after about $20k in charges and they slapped on a FR. I called and talked to them, reminding them that I had paid in full $70k a couple of times just recently, and that the types of charges were entirely consistent (not to mention made to major vendors). They didn't care so I paid off my account and have never done anything with them again.
if I'm going to use a card to run my business, I can't afford to have an account frozen and vendors not paid while Amex does whatever they do behind the scenes when nothing has changed in the spending patterns.

True. Good luck with your new app. What do you think you'll be going for? 70k to 8800 is such a big cut. Crazy! I don't think I could keep up with a card that I have to check what my limit is all the time.
I wound up applying for the Bank of America World Points Travel Rewards card, 0 annual fee as opposed to $450 annual fee.
I was instantly approved for 12,500.
Oh well, onward

Whoooo! Nice. I like BOA.
It's a $0 fee vs $450 because one is actually a travel credit card and the other is not. They are not even close to comparable cards. Still, congrats on the approval. If it fits your needs better, that's all that counts.

Well, its not a business card, but how about the InFirst FCU Visa Rewards credit card. 4% on Gas, 3% on Restaurant and Travel.
