I am done with Capital One

My SO is an AU on my card. He took it with him on a 3 week business trip to Singapore because of the no foreign transaction fees. Well, his company screwed up the hotel reservation and he ended up having to put a deposit on the card for the entire 3 weeks that maxed it out. I called Capital One to try to get a little breathing room on the card in case there's tax or a fee that would put it over the limit. Nope. They will not accept customer initiated CLIs, even in an emergency situation. So now he's stranded with only a debit card.

I informed the credit analyst that this policy is alienating their customers. This is the kind of thing that makes or breaks customer loyalty, but clearly they don't care. Every other card I have has a higher limit, so while they were good to me in the beginning, I'm done now. As soon as this gets straightened out with his company and it gets paid off, I'm closing it.

(And I bet they pulled all 3 reports, too. Jerks.)

Re: I am done with Capital One

The one saving grace may be that they most likely didn't pull any report, let alone all 3, simply because they don't accept customer initiated CLI requests.  I've never noticed a pull from them when I've asked in the past about a CLI (only to get a similar answer as you), only INQ's listed by them were from the application.

I don't know. She put me on hold while she filled out the request, and obviously, I wouldn't have cared if they'd given me a couple thousand CLI. Not that it matters, I'm not seeking any other credit right now, it's more the insult on top of injury. Smiley Wink

Re: I am done with Capital One

I've had my Capital One card since 2008 and I have probably asked for a CLI about four times. Each time denied. The most recent episode was about a month ago. I called and was placed on hold and he came back with a negative response. I've never had a hard pull from them. They don't even soft pull me. I think they just placed me on hold and pretended they were putting something in the computer. The answer is always no with Capital One. Always no.

I really thought under special circumstances like foreign travel, they would act differently. I even got transferred up a level. I don't know why they pretend they are "checking" if they know there is no way under any circumstance they will grant a CLI. They should just say no from the get-go. Not that I would be less annoyed, mind you.

Re: I am done with Capital One

What is the limit? and Why would he have to pay 3 weeks in advance vs maybe 5 days and try to get issue with company fixed to pay rest?

No it does not help now but I do not travel even in the states with less than 1 Drivers License and 1 State ID located in different locations, and also 2 credit cards at least.

They insisted on the full amount up front - $3000 (which actually turns out to be in SGD, so after conversion, he's not at his limit, but it's still a big chunk). He's a bit bleary after 31 hours of travel, so he's going to attempt to work it out in the morning (their time) when the regular desk staff come on. With the time difference, it will probably be a few days before it gets straightened out with his company, since no one answered in the home office when he called an hour ago. It's 3 a.m. in Singapore, so he's gone to bed without a resolution.

He has a debit card with him, so he can get cash, but you're right, I should have insisted he take 2 cards for exactly such a situation. And one with a higher limit - it was the siren song of the no foreign transaction fees that led to this folly.

I would definitely want to have at least one back up card with me, in case of a snafu. Live and learn...

He doesn't have a corporate CC? Rgeardless in this situation what I would do is push money to Capital One now to get the balance down.
