Ok so back in March of 2017, I opened a secured credit card with Wells Fargo with a $1,000 limit, and I've since raised it to $1,200. They've reviewed it time after time, and still won't graduate me. The last time was in July apparently and the lady on the phone said it was because of my checking account this time. There is NOTHING wrong with my checking account and I honestly feel like they're just making excuses not to graduate this stupid card. I haven't had any overdrafts in YEARS. I've kept a high balance in both my savings and checking. I've never missed a payment on this card. I honestly don't know what they could possibly mean by my checking account being the problem!
Is it time to close this card now? I only have 3 credit cards (Wells Fargo secured, Capital One $500 CL, and Discover IT $1,500 CL). I don't want to close any of my cards because I know having 3 is the best way to maximize your scores, but I'm just so fed up.
That sucks.
Your scores totally warrant the unsecured version IMO.
I would apply for another card and then close the Wells Fargo secured. The account will continue to report as a positive tradline for up to 10 years.
Definitely. With a secured card building history, you can likely apply for an unsecured Discover after 6 months (edit: I see you've already obtained unsecured CCs). After that, I'd ditch that bad boy and get my money back ASAP but definitely wouldn't keep it for more than a year at most. I wouldn't have the patience for a product that's fully collateralized by my funds while the lender is acting like they are doing me a favor by giving it to me. Please.
If I knew I was at the point that the card appeared bucketed, and based on a B.S. excuse from WF that it would not be growing, like you.. I would find a way to fast track eliminating my business from that lender.
Me personally, to offset the initial loss of that $1,200 available credit line since you only have the few cards listed, I'd look into either requesting a CLI on one of the other cards if possible OR waiting 1-3 months until you do get the CLI. Once you get that, immediately cancel the WF card and the CLI should hopefully make the loss from canceling WF appear a mute point on your CR.
I'll take the other stance and say just leave it. Am I reading this correctly that you are carrying a 759 balance on 1200 limit? If so, that might be a roadblock for you. I would pay that off and let the card sit. They will graduate it as time goes on and it doesn't cost you anything to leave it on your file.
Good luck!!
It looks like its a kinda rare thing to graduate from past posters. 1 guy waitied 6 years. April/Oct are the months many said they review accounts. Although how long have you been at 50% balance? Secured you should always PIF each month. Google it. Its all MyFICO threads from here.
Wow thank you to EVERYONE for the super quick responses!! I was trying so hard to let this card report at $200 and then, of course, life happened and I had to pay some things with this card. I'm really super tempted to close it, but I have enough money to pay it off now and leave it alone. This is the only card I let report a balance, but it has been quite high for a few months. I'll pay it off and then let it sit for a few months. If after that they still won't graduate it, then I'll move on.
My issue was them telling me my checking account was the problem. She said my scores were fine and the only reason they said they weren't upgrading it was because of my checking account.

I'll be honest here... it's been over 50% for quite some time. This card is the one I let report a balance, but I didn't know you should always PIF for secured cards. Since I'm not armed with that knowledge, I'm going to pay this whole thing off right now and leave it alone. I'll give them 3 months and that's it. I'll have a higher CL on my Capital One and Discover card by then, and I'm sure my scores will improve even more, too.
