I did the unthinkable. I closed my Amex BCE

So, Ive been in one of those moods lately.....the one where I clean house in the CC section, and noone is safe when that happens.  I gave it some thought, and I closed my Amex BCE tonight. I got no scuff about closing it, nor did I get sent to retentions, lol (wasn't expecting too).  I barely got the card back in June anyways, SL $500, and the acceptance of the card was with no offers.  I also did not get their version of "credit steps" email either.

Every time I applied for a CLI on the card, the system automatically denied it for "BK on credit reports", just like it did when I would apply before. I also know the rules of CLI with amex61/91/6mo. The CSR's dont understand at all what I try to tell them about the auto declines and that Im past their "5yr BK policy", and asked for MR of my account to be sent to the UW, and it fell on deaf ears. When I closed it tonight I got an american who I explained in great detail my story, and she was just as confused about the CLI denials, and opened up a complaint for me. I said, sure, whatever. Close it anyway, too much of a hassel and headache for me.

So why did I close it after trying for so long to get them back after BK?  Mostly a Challenge...I got it, mission accomplished. Then the challenge was on for a CLI on the card, which we all no as of late that the odds of that happening while my BK is still on reports is slim to none. My patience runs thin with cards that wont or dont increase, and honestly, I know myself, and this would just give me a headache trying for one over the next year to whenever with auto declines  and frustrating phone calls to people who dont understand anything. So, I basically saved myself.

I have no regrets, I still have my Business green and Business Cash $2k that I'll keep, and I did get sign up bonuses on those. Im pretty indifferent about getting the card anyways, and honestly, maybe in a year or two after my EXP reports calm down a little from new accounts and INQ, and my score is better, who knows, I might try again later and see if I get a better outcome. A side note..AMEX was not burned in my BK.

I know I can be a little hothead sometimes, and when I get on these kicks its not pretty, LOL, but, Im fine with my decision to close it, no regrets, and moving on!

p.s....My Chase Amazon Visa survived the cleaning tonight, as the limit is $3k, and well, its Chase, and they were a big burn in my BK, so Im keeping them, and no plans to close it, and I reconned for that card like 6 times, lol Smiley Happy

Bit of hot head eh? Well if they haven’t given you a CLI by now i am not sure they ever will. The thing about Amex CSR i tend to not like is how they have to follow their script no matter what there is no budging with them one bit.

It’s kind of funny i still have my BCE i haven’t used one bit for the last three years and they haven’t gave that card the axe yet, it may be because i put a lot of spend into my EDP but who knows.

Good for youSmiley Happy

I am kinda is the same boat, I had included them in BK 05 and yes they finally gave me a card/cards but 1K limit  and no "steps" email and will not grant me an increase ( they don't use the BK too old) but somewhere I feel as if I am bucketed for my past mistakes ( i know not a proven theory of course)  Anyhooooo , with my newest card approval SL 2K, I am holding out that this card "may" increase, however I will have to wait to "test" that theory and in the meantime if the other starter cards remain at 1K, I will close them out after the year and see if the newest one will grow.

Frankly, we haven't been very impressed with Amex at our house either.

If the card doesn't work for YOU, it's not worth keeping... I say you did good.  Smiley Happy

Re: I did the unthinkable. I closed my Amex BCE

I just had to close my Amex Delta Gold card, hit the 5 credit card Amex max, and wanted to get the signup bonus for the Amex Delta Reserve.   Not sure how the year two looks for that card, but the Year 1 even with the $450 AF is pretty profitable after the companian first class ticket, 70k miles and 10k MQMs.

Let's see, no AF card, good company, but low limit. Tough choice, I woulda kept it, though. Paid a inq for it, might as well.

Re: I did the unthinkable. I closed my Amex BCE

I find the BCE card next to useless myself.  A 3-2-1 card becomes just a 3% card for that one category when you have a 2% general spend card in your wallet.  Then, that 3% category is only yielding you 1% more than the general 2% card gives you.  Depending on your spend in that category, it may not even be worth it.  With the Amex $25 reward redeem threshold, for me it's kind of a worthless card.  It takes me at least 2 months if not 3 to bank enough rewards to redeem.  I'd rather just use my DC card where I can pull the rewards monthly, even if it means leaving a few bucks on the table.  The only real reason I keep my BCE card at this point is because it's got a $50k limit and aids considerably in aggregate utilization padding.

Time for an app spree to replace it.
