Don't I really don't like CCs...
Them plus a young uneducated version of me = troubles!
I really don't like the whole CC game... Needing to prove yourself with a dumb 3 digit number. Promoting spending without having the money in the bank ARG!
Anyway it if wasn't for things like houses I wouldn't even look at CCs.
Only reasons I am applying for cards is to raise CL and lower % use.

Good luck to u! Don't be jelly CC sucks!

Trouble when young doesn't have to mean trouble today, and I rarely ever spend anything that I don't already have in the bank.  I run everything through my cards for the rewards and I pay in full every month.  Usually twice per month with the only exceptions being Christmas and vacation where I might carry a balance for a month or 2.

Planning for a future mortgage is good too, but for me it's all about the rewards.  That Sallie Mae card will give you 5% cash back.  For me not taking advantage of the cash back seems like throwing money away.  I can't even remember the last time I used a debit card.

+1. As a mod emeritus said, CCs are like debit cards with very slow reflexes.

Congrats to OP on Sallie Mae and Amex. You are doing great! CL will increase with time. Now you just need to use your cards responsibly and you will see your scores go up!

Re: I don't get it... Someone please help me understand!

Are you guys saying that my Score should move along faster now?
Again for the past 3 years it has been like molasses! Here is a quick breakdown:

2011. Got job in August, income that year 50k
Just cleared all my defaulted CC, about 5k
Got with my student loans
Many defaulted and a few survived. Made all arrangements to pay them and made payments from that day on.
CC that year: 2 Secured CC

2012. Income that year 120k
Kept on paying all loans, new one poped up... Go figure.
Use my secured cards and PIF. Applied for 2 unsecured card got approved 500 each.
Canceled one secured card.

2013. Income 100k
Same, kept on paying my loans and always PIF.
Applied for Barclay Rewards got it for $750, this one I did not PIF to take advantage of 0 APR.

2014. Income probably 100-110k
FICO 700ish and CS is 675
Applied for Amex Blue Cash Everyday: 8k
Applied for Barclay CLI: Declined
Applied for Chase Saph. Pref.: Declined
Applied for Discover It: 1k
Applied for Sallie Mae: 3.2k

Goal: CS/FICO to be 750-800 with a CL of 30k

Re: I don't get it... Someone please help me understand!

Also I want to get rid all the following cards:

2 Cap1 MC at 750 both
1 Barclay Rewards MC at 1k

That's Sallie Mae of 3.2k should offset the closure of those 2.5k.
Problem is these are my oldest cards...
I don't wanna put out my chances for that 3X CLI from Amex...

What do you guys think?

There are 2 basic points of view on this question.  I tend to lean toward closing cards that no longer serve a purpose for me.  Others will chime in shortly advising that if there's no anual fee then you should leave them open.

Ultimately, as long as closing them doesn't hurt your utilization I think it's a matter of personal preference.

OP, great job on Sallie Mae and AMEX!   Yes, some lenders just prefer to work with some people and some don't.   Who knows why?   Anyway, Discover won't give me a card (probably because they were IIB and I burned them for $13K), but AMEX is more than happy to give me two good CCs (I closed them long before my BK).

Yes, that would probably be enough reason for them!

Re: I don't get it... Someone please help me understand!

Man I am REALLY tempted!
I really HATE CAP1! Their cards are crappy, both physically and rewards.
I have 2 of those with a combine CL of 1.5k
What are the adverse effect on my Score?

utilization shouldn't be affected since I got better cards to replace them. Maybe I should wait for the new cards to report before giving them a hair cut...
The thing that really worries me is the history, they are my oldest cards.

As far a the Barclay Rewards I will try to combine that with the new Sallie Mae that I got.
I know a member here mentioned it, but can it be done? Has it been done before?

The longer I wait, the heavier those cards feels like in my wallet.

Thanks guys!

The biggest danger is untilization.  The cards will continue to be factored into your AAoA for 10 years.

My scores actually went up when I closed my Crap1 cards.  They aren't worh the hassle to deal with.  I vote close em!

Man i feel your pain with Crap1. Smiley Frustrated I don't know what i ever did to them. Never had any of their CC's b4 ever, so never burned them or late them, and have used my GM CC responsibly as heck, PIF, roll Bal a month, run up to almost max then PIF, and still their EO burned & wasted a perfectly good HP for a CLI request for a mere 400 in order to even out the $600 SL to 1000. The old saying about First Impressions? Thank Goodness this is the first Crap1 one CC ever because to put it mildly, they have been anything but reasonable or a lender worthy of both my spend and/or attention anymore. I'll keep it for the FICO purposes for awhile but i never will chance a nother app with them again unless their bought out by a better bank.

I could be wrong but after Amex gave me a 15k credit limit when other approvals were 1 to 2k I think Amex weighs income more than others. It took me going to the Capone EO to get them to 3k and I have had that card for a while.

IDK. I have an income over 100k and AMEX won't even give me a revolver. They also pull my lowest report so that could be a factor. Although Chase pulled Experian for my Marriott card and still gave me the card.

Hilton Honors $15,000 | AMEX Green | Chase Sapphire Preferred $9000 | Discover IT $6600 | Marriott Premiere Rewards $5000 | Chase Freedom $5500 | Barclaycard Visa with Apple Rewards $2000 | CapitalOne Quicksilver One $2000 | US Airways Dividend Miles $2400

Re: I don't get it... Someone please help me understand!

It's has been decided! Cut em!!!!
I will burn both Cap1 as soon as I activate:

Amex Blue Cash Everyday 8k
Discover it 1k
Sallie Mae 3.2k

LAST CHANCE GUYS.
Please let me know if this can even slightly ruin my chances with the 3x CLI with Amex!
