I had no idea what I was doing when I did it.. Now I do...Thank you...

I've been a member of  myfico for a little  under two months and boy has  it changed my life!

A little on my story--- I had credit in the past- but didn't RESPECT or MANAGE it well. I'd come to the conclusion that all hope was lost and when my DH would try to bring up the topic of getting my credit in order, I would ignore the suggestion. Like many--- for a very long time I was frustrated and embarrassed at my situation.  I figured "cash was king" and we had enough and DH had excellent credit-- so I'd would get around to getting mine together....at some point. In a nutshell it was no biggy to me-- because I'd get around to taking care of it.  Then life hit us hard when the economic downturn took us out of our comfortable life to one that was riddled with fiscal challenges. We both suffered and lost. (We are currently working on his issues now-- he went from an 815 to a current 584!)

Right now my stuff looks okay for those that don't know any better- but I had no idea what I was doing when I did it.--- one day I took a chance and  applied for a Best Buy card- Approved!  Six months later I tried Capital One and on the same day- an Ann Taylor card-- both Approved!  I was so happy!!!!!! But like I said, I still had no clue.  Then periodically, I would apply for credit cards at stores I liked and for the discountSmiley Happy. Somewhere along the way I figured out that GE was approving me/giving me a chance, so I started reading the terms and looking at the credit provider- so I applied for GE backed cards. Samething With Comenity Bank. Along the way I racked up a heavy amount of inqs-- again no clue.  I didn't have a plan, I was just so happy to get approved.  I was proud of my "accomplishments", but had no true understanding of how things worked or rather how I could make things work for myself.

As an example, I had no idea that you could ask for a CLI, what the true impact utilization had on your score or that you could recon. I thought no was no and to just be satisfied With the credit limit you received, because being approved was better than not being approved- Once again I had no idea.  When I look back I was rather sloppy with my approach or lack there of :smileyhappy:

Then I stumbled across myfico.... I was talking with someone who/was is considering BK and closing a credit card and I Goggled the keywords "closing credit cards"  and myfico showed up. I read the information and kept reading and reading and reading! I was impressed with the knowledge and support. I was even more impressed with the successes. So here I am(daily) reading and learning laughing and smiling.  Now I'm a Myfico freak! I talk to anyone and everyone that will listen. I share with them and point them in the direction of the forum... We have a family reunion coming up and I'm placing info in the goody bags about myfico.Smiley Happy )I  had no talking to me about  crdit in a real way-- so I'm sharing the love!Heart)

Since I've joined, I've contacted Capital One- proudly asked for a credit increase- which I didn't get, but I did get my AF removed. Starting getting my utilization down and joyfully watch for the auto credit increases from GE.  However, in my excitement, I have had some missteps--I did applied too soon for Amex and Discover( I'll write more on my Discover experience in another post---they were fantastic!)  So I'm happily in the garden, sipping" French martinis' and tending to my credit. Once things have grown, I will revisit both credit providers, but that's only after I clean up a few baddies, inqs fall-off and get my utilization down. All of which I had no idea how to approach, until I came here. Also, I've had great conversations with Executive CR's and learned a lot from them  as well on how to improve my standing.

I give a great big thank you to the knowledgeable folks here at myfico that cheer you on when you're successful, give real world sensible advise when needed and show respect during the process.

I know that  I'm on to a path of success-- and I hope my words inspire some. I got it..... finally and I thank you.

LOL..  09Lexie..Yep  I sure am.  Myfico information is going right  in the goody bag with the updated family directory, teeshirt and pen! We typically have a session of some importance with the younger ones. One year we had cooking lessons, another time we taught the video generation, how to play marble and fly a kite... This year they are getting credit lessons!Smiley Wink

Thanks BrokaToe(cool name by the way). Learning about credit should be a basic life skill and for many its not. My parents did their best and offered the knowledge that they knew and I fumbled around the rest of the way on my own.

Children retain what they learn early in life-- so I'm grabbing them early. And hopefully the adults will get something out of it tooSmiley Happy

Before you app think...
Have you done your research of the CC?
Does it fit your spending?
Do you have a plan for the bonus w/o going into debt?
Can you afford the AF?
Do you know the cards benefits? Is it worth the HP?
