I have a question about credit card usage and increasing my credit score

I have a credit card that has a zero balance. I want to increase my credit score as much as possible over the next two years, because I want to purchase a home. I pay all my bills on time and I have no debt...my car is paid off and I rent. So beyond paying my bills on time, I don't have anything else. I was thinking of using this credit card (that has a zero balance) for my daily shopping...groceries, gas, etc...then coming home and paying it off at the end of each day. Will this boost my credit? Or do I have to wait until closer to the due date to pay it off for that to work? I can wait to pay it off at the end of the billing cycle, if need be, but I thought if I could just use it kind of like a debit card and pay it off everyday it would be easier for me. So, should I pay it off immediately when used? Wait a few days to pay it off? Or pay it off a day or two before the monthly bill is due?

Re: I have a question about credit card usage and increasing my credit score

For credit scoring, using the card and paying it off immediately, is essentially the same as never using it. The way credit scoring works, your balance at the time of reporting to the credit bureaus is really the only thing that matters. Most cards report to the bureaus the balance of your card at the end of your statement closing date.

So, if your statement closes on the 5th of every month, the balance on your card on the 5th is the only thing that matter for scoring purposes. If you pay your card to $0 on the 4th, it looks like you never used the card, which is fine. Basically all that matters is that on the statement date (the 5th in this case) your balance is between 1-9% of your limit.

Also, this only matter in those months where someone is looking at your credit score because you are applying for something. Every other month doesn't matter, since FICo doesn't keep track of utilization on an ongoing basis.

Use the card however you want, and just pay it down before the statement date to 1-9%. Then pay the remainder off before the due date.

Thank you for your reply! So does it matter that I even use the card, since I'm not applying for anything? Or should I just keep it at a zero balance and not use it?

Re: I have a question about credit card usage and increasing my credit score

Use it but make sure when you apply for the mortgage you have it all paid off a month before hand so your total credit utilization is low. Also what credit card do you have and what's the current CL limit?
***AMEX PLATINUM NPSL *******AMEX BCP 23,100***** CITI DOUBLE CASHBACK $5,900 *****Chase Sapphire Preferred $10,000 **** Chase Freedom $8,000 *****Sears Mastercard Platinum $5,000 **** Macy's Star Rewards $1,000 ***** American Express BCE $24,900 (AU) **** *****Discover IT $8,500 (AU)*****

Re: I have a question about credit card usage and increasing my credit score

It is a card through my credit union with a $1000 limit (I asked for $1000 or under limit when I applied for the card). I've never applied for another card and I only applied for that one so that I would have something extra for when I travel. I've used it a couple of times and paid it in full by the due date. I've never carried a balance past the due date on it. My card actually got closed due to inactivity (not the account, but they cancelled my actual card) and I have to order another card if I want to use the account. I guess I just need to know if it's even necessary to use it to raise my credit score? I mean, does it raise your score if you carry a balance (under 10%)? Or is it better to just keep a zero balance?

Re: I have a question about credit card usage and increasing my credit score

The quote button disappeared from my iPad..... Mods have any answers??

Anyway - it does technically raise your score to REPORT, not carry, a $1 balance versus $0.

Carrying implies that you did not pay in full by the due date, and therefore paid interest. Reporting just means that there was a balance on your card at the time the bank reported to the credit bureaus. Just pointing out the difference.

Also, you should try to use the card once in a while so that it does not close due to inactivity. It is possible that if you let the card go active that it would no longer be reporting to the bureaus, and therefore wouldn't be showing as an "open tradeline". Many mortgage lenders require a borrower to have numerous open tradelines to qualify for a mortgage.
