I'm always going to PIF, with a charge card I can run the 2k I run through my debit card every month yet earn points. Then all of the fringe benefits that come with the card. Especially the early access to tickets and preferred seating. I can make 5x the annual fee by buying and selling a few sets of tickets on ebay with this feature.

1. That's totally fine, but there are many people who--as other members have mentioned--really benefit from charge cards because they use them as their debit cards and PIF every month. It keeps their finances on track and they rack up the rewards points.
2. As for not liking AMEX, that is fine too. They are a rigid company, but they treat their customers well. And by customers, I do mean those that use the cards regularly, pay on time and preferably in full, and respect the credit they are given. Many other cards are now offering the same benefits and I hear Discover has better customer service than AMEX, so you may wish to try business with them.
3. Personally, I didn't know AMEX was such a big deal until I started this forum. To me, it was the first credit card I ever owned and I like them because they have great CSRs that don't have accents. I have so much difficulty with accents on the phone, it's sad. I think this was more a grandfathered effect. AMEX had a lot of prestige in our parents' generation and that has carried over to some of us today. In the end, a credit card is a credit card. They all swipe the same; for the most part spend the same; and as long as you pay in full and never have a problem that will require you to call in; there is no real difference in what you carry in your wallet.
I'm sorry you had a bad experience with a company I love so much, but that's the way it goes.
Good Post!

snip....
AmEx 2011 Annual Report to shareholders stated there were currently 98,000,000 AmEx cards out there (98 million), that's a lot of "Prestige".
Note I carried AmEx cards for 26 years including Platinum when you had to be invited to get one. I stopped carrying AmEx cards when they no longer fit my needs or justifying multiple AF's (2 or 4 had an AF).
"Prestige" never ever had anything to do with any card I carried, then or now. Frankly to pay a company an AF or use their product because of marketed status is ridiculous. Use any product or service because it fits your needs, there is no other reason IMO, certainly not ersatz prestige.
Ok! We all have our opinions. Thanks for yours. Amex is still the King of Credit as is Arty is the king of warfare!

I'll sign on to AMEX being the king od credit when they give me that BCE!!! ![]()
Reading some of these posts really makes me wonder if people know the definition of prestige.
I don't find plastic or titanium prestigious. The most I ever get is "This card is heavy". If going solely for an Amex for prestige and impressing others, your going to be disappointed.

- The level of respect at which one is regarded by others; standing.
- A person's high standing among others; honor or esteem.
- Widely recognized prominence, distinction, or importance: a position of prestige in diplomatic circles.

I blame this forum for half the cards I have. I mean, someone of my age should have 1-2 student cards. Look what you people do to me! lol
