Reading some of these posts really makes me wonder if people know the definition of prestige.

  • The level of respect at which one is regarded by others; standing.
  • A person's high standing among others; honor or esteem.
  • Widely recognized prominence, distinction, or importance: a position of prestige in diplomatic circles.

I don't find plastic or titanium prestigious. The most I ever get is "This card is heavy". If going solely for an Amex for prestige and impressing others, your going to be disappointed.

...........I know you got some looks at that Cent!!!!! Smiley Wink

Usually due to weight. Not once due to status. Smiley Tongue

This I agree with. People will always prize Amex cards.

Edit: Meaning prize in an admiring way. You always see Amex brought up here more than any other issuer.

I would say a foot in the door to obtain one of their credit cards(revolving) in near future. Backdating is probably number one reason.

I wouldn't agree that they prize them.  Some people used to remember what it was like when our parents pulled out an AMEX and people would rush to help them or provide better service.  The card does not nearly have the effect it once did because it is no longer held in such high esteem.  Most people I know carry an AMEX because they frequent Costco or because they were an authorized user on their parents' accounts and they just got the same card in their adulthood because they liked the service.  To most people, credit cards are tools and some use them better than others.

Well, different strokes for different folks.

Who wants to worry about your "No Preset Spending Limit" evolving for some foggy reason and then getting the rug pulled out from under you when you least expect it? Who wants to have to check if Amex will authorize a larger purchase or even a smaller one depending on circumstances when a credit limit and knowledge of your balance is so much safer?

That is why I do not like charge cards. That and they cost an annual fee. If I only charge $30 on a charge card for six months and then try to put $5000 it will probably be declined because it is way out of my spending habits. If I do the same on a card with a $10000 limit it will go through no problem and I always know that I can charge at least $10000. I always pay before the statement closes so utilization is not important to me but I can understand that for people who charge a lot and do no pay it off right way, that would really help with their score.

I do have other cards with better rewards for other things but the 3% for groceries can not be beat. Sallie Mae is 5% but I think it is capped at $500 a month, I am not sure. I have no problem with it being accepted where I want to use it.

I can never see myself with a charge card. Before looking at this site I never knew American Express was thought of so highly, I always thought they were garbage.

Doubtful on your example.  If you have the money, and the history with a charge card company they are unlikely to decline you.  It makes a lot of sense to me that a company would decline people who try to spend more than they can or have in the past and paid.  This discussion seems to have the makings of folks who can't hack it with AMEX, or in reality cannot manage a PIF account (despite what a lot of folks write on the internet).

Re: I just don't get the allure of Amex Charge Cards

Well if you are just starting out with the card you have no history, and they have no idea how much money you have. I do have an American Express card, with a 10,000 Limit. I did not need to have a one of their charge cards first. I have many cards that I use nd always pay in full before the statement even closes. IT makes no sense to me to pay interest on acredit card, ever.

I do not have anything against American Express. For me, personally, there are a Lot more cards with better rewards. I only need cashback so redeeming for flights is worthless to me. As is Access to airport lounges, so IT would be silly for me to pay a fee to use a card. The few times I have had to hand over the card to be swiped th clerk said nothing of it being an American Express. I just do not think that many people find it prestigious.
