Welcome OP,

Yes, you can get all 3 credit reports free of charge every 12 months. Here is the link https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action.

Due to your fixed income status, I don't recommend CCT. In the beginning, CCT was easy peasy to get all 3 credit reports for $1 for 7 days free. However, now you have to almost climb Mt. Rushmore in order to get it cancelled. You call and call, and you email, and then they charge your credit card $29.99 only to have to credit it back to you blah blah blah. IMHO, the $1 is truly not worth the aggravation when one is on a fixed income, especially when you can get it free.

I suggest going to DiscoverIT or Capital prequal page and see if you're qualified for any of their cards.

Also, you can ask your mom and/or her fiancee to make you an AU on their cards.

Actually, you can now cancel online. Smiley HappyCapture.JPG

Thanks for the replies...

Does it hurt me if I apply for one and get denied? Obviously there will be a HP, but is there anything else to be concerned about?

Also, if I get rejected for one, should I be hesitant to apply for another? How many HPs is considered bad?

Lasly, which AMEX, Discover, or other cards should I focus my attention on if I go for them? Are the ones I listed initially good ones to go for? A few of you have suggested AMEX and I've read other's saying Capital One is good for starters... Any specific card suggestions?

Depends on the person. To me, 3 HPs are not bad.

Capital One is a good candidate, though your starting limit may be low. YMMV.

Discover has approved college students with your income, so you may have a shot. Your credit seems strong, so you have that going for you too. Smiley Wink

Like Discover, AMEX has approved college students with limited income. Your credit may help you get a card, though with a low SL, say $500. Again, YMMV. Smiley Happy

Alright, thanks. Smiley Happy

Any specific cards you'd suggest? If I can, should I aim for 1 or 2 new cards?

Does it hurt to have cards that you don't use often? Should I tried to get a credit line of some multiple of my income or anything? Sorry, I'm just asking random questions at this point because I don't really know what factors into a score.

I like the DiscoverIT because the first year it doubles your cashback and it has rotating categories. Right now it's restaurants but from October to December, it's Amazon and Warehouses--just in time for Xmas shopping:smileyvery-happy

And, there's also no AF and if I recall correctly, Discover likes thin files.

No, 1 or 2 HPs will not kill you, but why not check first Discover, Capital 1, or AmX to see if you are prequalified. And if there is not one, then go ahead and pull the trigger. Personally, I would do it in this order: Discover, AmX, and Capial One. I say this because Discover may not put you in a bucket whereas CapitalOne may if you're approved.

Again, I'm rooting for you,

The Discover It card and/or AMEX BCE. One card is fine for now. That's up to you. Smiley Happy

So you're suggesting the DiscoverIt Cash Back, right? I was looking at the Miles one too, wasn't too sold on it though.

Seeing as my first card is the Amazon Prime Rewards, I already get 5% cash back on Amazon.com year round, 2% as restrauants, gas stations, and drugstores, 1% on everything else. So if getting it for another line of credit, it makes sense... but the rewards alone overlap quite a bit.

Remember to be strategic, a couple pulls wont hurt you but if you come up empty, give it a couple months. Dont want to come off as desperate. Great advice on checking prequals. Im not a fan of them, ive never been prequaled for anything snd have done ok. But in your case it might give you a general idea.

Use the pre-qual. tool to see if it comes up for you. If not, apply for it out right and see what happens. I agree with AJC: be strategic.

How does the prequal work?

I'm assuming they do a SP for this, right? If they prequalify you, do they then end up doing a HP too if you accept one of their prequalified offers?
