Just wanted to let everyone know that Discover now uses a third party for income verification. Called in tonight and was approved for a card, but was surprised by them knowing my exact income. No wiggle room anymore it seems.
So, what you saying is Discover does not go by the annual income what we tell them at the time of app? Did you app over the phone? or Online?
App'd online but because of fraud alert had to call in. Rep said they use a 3rd party vendor and asked if my income included overtime. They knew exaclty what i make.

Methinks they weren't speaking 100% of the truth.
Try and get pay information for someone else... anyone else... that information is not public record, which is why you see alot of banks and whatnot asking for paystubs and w-2s.
Keep in mind that your income sometimes shows on your credit report... espcially if you have apped other cards, and consistently list the same value.

It's impossible for them to know your exact income unless you tell them. Your employer certainly cannot release that information to any party without your consent. But, if you're a government worker, your salary information is available to the public.

I've never seen or heard income being on credit reports. I don't think there's any truth to that. Maybe illegal to even include that. Only one's employer is listed on their credit reports if either you or the creditor reported it to the CRAs.
they said it was provided by a third party vendor called the work number (a service of equifax), which we use for employment verification purposes.
Several companies offer it, TALX being one of the largest. Among other things, they do HR/Tax/Personnel management for your employer.
The service has access to your income because they have your W2.
The work number only allows you to voluntarily submit a 4506-t of your income so that a third party service can verify it through them (if you're shopping for auto loans or a mortgage).
Something doesn't smell right here.
I asked this question on another thread. How do they verify income for a self employed 1099 contractor, if they do at all? How would you even state your monthly income to them. I took last years tax return and divided by 12, is this the way you would do it?
Edit: by "them" I mean any credit card company not just Discover.
